About the Author
Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia.��They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art.��They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art.��During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory.��When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines.��After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy.��Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt.��It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears."��


Stan and Jan planned all of their books together. They both wrote the stories and created the pictures.� They continued to live outside of Philadelphia in the country.� There are now over 300 Berenstain Bears books.

A Great Rhyming Berenstain Bears book

This is one of the earlier type of Berenstain Bears books, that rhymes in a very simple style perfect for new or early readers. The great theme is that the father, in teaching his son how to ride a bike, makes mistake after mistake, and after each disaster tells him, "this is something you should NOT do" while the son patiently and wisely watches and learns. Delightful; your young child is sure to love it. Sadly, later Berenstain rhyming books are flat and dull; then they stopped rhyming entirely. This book is lively, clever, and pure delight. (Kenneth Higbee has a useful "list" of rhyming Berenstain Bears books -- this is not on that list as of this writing.)

"The Bike Lesson" is a fantastic story, but this recent reprint leaves a lot to be desired

I have two sons, one five and a half and the other two and a half years old, and they LOVE this story. Almost every few weeks, I have to journey back to the library and check it out as it's one of their favorite bedtime stories. Granted, it gets them a little wound up because they love to laugh at seeing Papa Bear take all his silly tumbles and pratfalls, but they listen and look at every page as I read it. My youngest calls it the "Oooooh, daddy!" book because he loves to shout that out every time Papa Bear falls off, catapults over, or submerges on the bike. Needless to say, its a big hit in our house. :)

So, I finally had enough and decided "They like it that much, I'm just gonna buy the darn thing!" I just got it in from Amazon and everyone in the house (my wife included), was totally disappointed. There must have been a recent "updated" reprint, because the copy that Amazon is selling is lacking in comparison to the original. For starters, it does not have the classic cover from 1964 as the item page shows above. Instead, if you want to see what you'll get if you buy this, choose the "Kindle Edition" to see the new cover. Also, the colors in the book are either completely different or totally washed out. It's as if someone forgot to load the 'Red' into the printing press and the 'Green' was on its way out. For example...

Rocks which were chocolate brown in '64 are now stone grey.
The bears which were a deep tan in '64 are now a pale beige/creamy, sickly yellow
And in this version the greens are all desaturated and washed out
etc. etc. etc.

If you want to get a copy of this fantastic book that still retains the vibrant richness and heart as Stan and Jan originally made it, then I suggest that you try to find it in a store in person, or via a site such as eBay, where you can see what you're actually going to be getting.

Again, the story is beautiful and fun and I can't recommend it enough to kids and parents alike; but this current edition is literally a poor copy of what a great experience this book is to enjoy. And no amount of silly voices while reading it can compensate for bland colors and washed-out pages. ;)

Great book for Musicians

I loved this book. At first I thought it was going to be a same old dry Chapter 1. Make goals, Chapter 2. Work for them. 3. Don't give up 4. You did it! over simplified type of ebook that can be common on Amazon, but it's not. The first chapter right away impressed me, as it did start with the "Make your goals" part, but then followed it up with affirmations and directions for a specific to do list. Great ideas for making your goals really come to life, not just crap you write on a page and then never look at again.

After that first chapter, it really delves into very specific and musician focused ways to improve. Specific tips like using your metronome, slow and fast practicing, how long you should spend on certain practice areas, ear training--and really just some specific, great tips that musicians really can employ and use to hone their craft.

Fantastically helpful book for any musician who wants to improve!

I wasn’t so keen on the motivational part, although I understand that it is a big part of it, because then you might as well buy one of those general motivational books. But the specific methods to practicing music were very interesting, and that’s why I think this book deserves 5 stars.

Great Book - Easy to Read, Understand, and Reference!

This is a wonderful book! It offers information and options, particularly when/where modern western medicine falls short (something that is happening too often these days, particularly with regard to transgenic GMOs). I read this book quite thoroughly when I first got it and have referred to it constantly through the years. Recently I gave my personal copy away to a friend in need and so purchased another copy for our household. I thought it was about time I came online and mentioned my feelings to other interested shoppers. This book has helped me enormously and I highly recommend it! 5-Stars, without reservation.

COMPLETE GUIDE ..is a good title.

I am very happy to have this book...there is so much to learn from the ancient teachings of CHINESE way of body balancing and use of HERBS. NOT ALL HERBS ARE GOOD FOR everyone..it all depends on your body type...every thing is toxic....lol...too many of the western world practitioners over use and have overdosed on many herbs that are good for each person's needs.
I think it is fortunate for this information by LETHA HADADY....lol..maybe a reincarnated chinese herb master from China...

In Full Moon, one of the best science photography books ever published, Michael Light presents a voyage in images to the Moon and back. Light took NASA's master negatives of photos taken by Apollo astronauts and scanned them electronically. The resulting pictures are so vivid they seem more clear than real life. Light orders the photos sequentially, selecting the most arresting images from each mission, to create a truly cinematic experience. In the first section, depicting blastoff, you can almost feel the violent shaking of the rocket as it strains to escape Earth's gravity. Then you see the quiet stillness of weightlessness, the astronauts' view down at a perfectly silent Earth, boundless oceans contrasting with bright white clouds. A spacewalk adds vertigo--the astronaut looks fragile and very alone as he floats outside his capsule far above his home planet. Then comes the waiting, as the long voyage toward the Moon continues.

As you watch the cratered surface get closer and closer, you have no sense of scale until you see the miniscule silver and gold lander dropping gently to land on the Moon. Leaving the cluttered interior of the capsule in bulky, awkward suits, the astronauts bring delicate tracings of color--gold on the lander; red, white, and blue on the spacesuits' flag patches--to this black-and-white world. Five huge gatefolds in this section give you indescribable views of the intricately scarred surface of the Moon.

You return to space for the reuniting of the lander and capsule, and a repetition of the tedious journey back home. Finally, you watch a chaotic splashdown in the riot of colors that is Earth.

A nice section in the back of the book explains each photo with a detailed caption, and an essay by author Andrew Chaikin (A Man on the Moon) adds more written context to this stunning visual experience. This is an outstanding coffee-table book. The photographs and double-truck fold-out pages of the lunar surface are stunning.

The effect that the compositor--that's really what Michael Light is here--is after is a little on the arty side, though. For instance, he strips out most, if not all, color on the Moon (which is notoriously difficult to reproduce--there's a good discussion of the problem on the Lunar Surface Journal online), leaving only back and white tonal ranges. That's not a complaint but rather a simple observation about the compositor's intent.

Also, the sequence of images is really taking you to and from the Moon, with little regard for the proper order of the various Apollo missions -- six in all (Apollos 11 thru 17, minus Apollo 13, which orbited but never landed) -- and their unique sets of photographs. But that works well here, I must admit. In this regard, it's LIKE a book version of the fantastic film, and now a Criterion Collection DVD, called For All Mankind (directed by Al Reinert).

Note that there are two editions of this book on Amazon. One is 11.7 square and the other is 8.5 square--or about 25 percent smaller. In a book like this, that's a significant difference. But is the larger trim worth twice the price? Well, that all depends on you. I think the larger book is better, but I've also bought the smaller book to give away as gifts, since I got an amazing deal on them--just under $10 in a bin somewhere. I did buy the original when it came out, and it remains one of my favorite books of photography and space.

Closer to Half Moon, I'm sorry to say...

As a lifelong "space cadet" (i.e., astronaut wannabe who never will), I looked forward to this book after reading about it in a recent New Yorker story about the renovated planetarium in NYC. I was somewhat disappointed, for several reasons: (1) several pictures were blurred (absolutely inexcusable for this kind of project, and incomprehensible with so many 1000s of pictures to choose from); (2) too much black space (i.e., empty black pages that - even allowing for the aesthetics of leaving a page blank so as to focus on a single picture - left me with the feeling of too much wasted space that could've been used for fabulous pictures; (3) not enough pictures we hadn't seen before, and too many we had; (4) too many moon detail shots that began to look like one another; (5) and digitization of many photos made them look artificial. Having said that, there were 3-4, maybe 5, absolutely stunning shots of the earth that just take your breath away (not the usual "Earthrise" ones - closer in). For those of you who love space photos, NASA has audio-visual units that sell copies to average citizens (of course, we HAVE paid for them already, in a manner of speaking, but they're wonderful for a personal collection). If you're in DC, you can just stop in at NASA HQ and peruse from a selection of 100s/1000s. I suspect other NASA facilities may do the same.

A beautiful and artful collection of some very amazing photographs from the Apollo missions. I was amazed by a lot of them...and before I closed the book, I felt the urge to call my Senator and demand our return to the moon.

About the Author
Gloria Konig Fiero was born and raised in New York City. She earned her Masters degree in Art History at the University of California, Berkeley, and her Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Humanities at the Florida State University. She has taught Humanities, World History, and Art History for more than twenty-five years. She has written and lectured extensively on medieval and renaissance topics and on the arts of both East and West as they reflect the human condition. She currently divides her time between New Orleans, Louisiana, and New York City.

Pretty good, for a textbook

I rented this book for my Humanities 201 class, and I thought that it was gonna be the exact same as most other textbooks: boringly written in boring style with boringly boring boredom printed everywhere. This one isn't like that! It's hard to make a textbook on history interesting but the author of this book sure gave it a shot and it turned out pretty well. Instead of just listing events it talks more about how cultures and civilizations influenced each other across the globe and through the years. It is much easier to learn about humanity when you're focussing on the bigger picture, not looking at the little pieces with scrutiny. There are excerpts from historical texts to add a sense of authenticity to the lessons, and the online resources are actually very helpful as well.

I know that if you're getting this for a college class you probably don't have a choice on what book to buy, but if you're assigned this one then it won't be bad at all!

Self-study book? Not really. Extra practice? Definitely.

After finishing the Azar books:

Will you increase your familiarity with grammar concepts? Absolutely. You will be introduced to new structures and you will improve your ability to differentiate between similar structures. You’ll be exposed to many important grammar terms, and you’ll probably increase your own grammatical awareness.

Will your understanding of English grammar improve? Probably. With your increased familiarity, English grammar will begin to become more comfortable. The ample practice exercises will reinforce correct construction, and your ability to reproduce correct grammar structures will improve.

Will your actual grammar improve in “real life?” Possibly, a little bit. There is a good chance that your increased familiarity and understanding will result in more accurate language production in authentic situations. However, reading grammar explanations does not offer a realistic understanding of the true meaning of a grammar function. Similarly, completing out-of-context gap-fill exercises will be unlikely to have a noticeable impact on your spoken and written accuracy.

The bottom line is that the Azar series of books is best used as supplemental practice to a properly staged and scaffolded general English or grammar course. The book is not set up to be a grammar course or a grammar self-study course. Its information is decontextualized, and the lessons are organized by concept rather than in a series of logical and incremental steps. The information in the book does not build on the information that came before, rather each chapter is it’s own beast that must be tamed.

For students wishing to learn grammar from a book, I advise that if there is even the tiniest chance to take an English course or find a tutor, do it. A class will improve the accuracy of your written and spoken English much more efficiently than any book will. If you are a student, and you want a reference book or a set of practice exercises for self-study, this book might be good for you, but the Raymond Murphy book is just as good for that purpose, and it's much cheaper. If you are a student taking an English course, and you are looking for extra practice, this is a good, but expensive option. If you are an ESL teacher (like me) hoping to provide additional practice to your students to compliment your current course book, then the Azar book comes highly recommended. I believe the best use of the Azar books is in-class, and not for self-study.

A note about level: For at least 75% of students, the gray book (Fundamentals) is the better choice. Do not think about the blue book until you are a solid upper-intermediate learner on the cusp of advanced (B2 or similar). The blue book is thorough, but the exceptions, special cases, and rarely-used examples will be unnecessarily confusing. The gray book covers the most common errors made by intermediate students, and will be a good way to review the basics for learners at any level.

Excellent ESL Resource

I have used several previous versions of this text and have found it very useful in the past. The latest edition is improved in several areas
1. The text examples have been updated to employ 21st century language and the use of modern communication methods (email/ texting vis-a vis letter writing).
2. The illustrations are updated and in color.
3. The inclusion of meaningful oral exercises are peppered in to reinforce the grammar construct being discussed.

I would recommend this to any ESL teacher of adults either as a stand-alone program or the way I use it, to supplement an existing ESL program

Good for Learners and Teachers

Betty Azar is the grammar queen! Her grammar books guide English Language Learners step by step as they learn the English grammar system. The fourth edition of Fundamentals includes a CD for listening and pronunciation practice which makes this edition worth the investment even if you have purchased previous editions. The warm-up exercises, which are not found in previous editions, are a valuable addition. Students attempt to "guess" the correct answer before the grammar point is presented, allowing for some inductive learning. The book includes many exercises to help ELLs grasp the presented grammar point.

United Nations Politics takes a unique approach that focuses on the politics that is, the persistent and mostly singular emphasis that all member states place on the pursuit of national political, economic, cultural and ideological interests of UN affairs. The project began as an effort to research and write a ten-year-later sequel to The Challenge of Relevance written by Puchala and Coate in 1989. This earlier volume was an assessment of the United Nations and its operations in the late eighties. United Nations Politics builds from a series of some 200 interviews conducted at the UN and in various member-state missions between 2000 and 2005. Among other things , these interviews revealed that the existing English-language literature on the UN fails to take into appropriate account the dynamics and the impacts of the internal and external political contexts within which the UN operates. This book directly addresses this shortcoming in the academic literature.
