Thank you for the opportunity to review the Academic & Behavioral Interventions: Evidence-Based Interventions for All Students by K. Johnson, K. Kaase, and J. Griffin. This timely text is likely to be a very helpful resource for a variety of professionals including school administrators, teachers, social workers, school psychologists, reading specialist, RtI coordinators, and intervention specialists. Published by the Institute for Evidence-based Reform (TIER), the 422 page text is plastic spiral bound with durable cover and pages. There are numerous components of the text worth noting including its focus, design, and layout.
The focus of this text is on intervention and more specifically intervention outcome. The authors provide a rich resource of interventions for reading, math, active participation/engagement, and social behavior. However, the unique aspect of this book which is undoubtedly going to be most appealing to educators and parents alike is strong guidance in how to implement, tweak, modify, and trouble shoot interventions that is often lacking in most intervention resource books. One strong component of the text that fosters this guidance is the emphasis on treatment integrity through the encouragement of the use of intervention integrity checklists.
The design of is also a major positive characteristic of the book. The authors provide a framework for understanding learning and instruction through a basic instructional hierarchy. By educating the user about how to more effectively connect students the appropriate instructional methods for their respective skill level the user will be better equipped to select and implement the right intervention to more effectively and efficiently address student needs. The text may help the user to more accurately identify, among a host of potentially effective interventions, the most helpful solution.
The layout of the text provides for a quick access to a variety of interventions with a complete description of:
a. who the intervention is designed for by age/grade,
b. where the intervention could be provided (e.g., home, school, clinic etc.),
c. whether it is an individual or group oriented intervention,
d. what instructional skill level the intervention targets (e.g., accuracy, fluency, maintenance, generalization, etc.),
e. the rationale and research support for the intervention,
f. the materials required for implementation,
g. the procedures in a step-by-step format,
h. methods for adjustment/modifications, and
i. a list of references to provide an empirical basis of the intervention’s effectiveness
Although the text provides educators with a plethora of intervention resources for a variety of common issues there is one potential drawback. Specifically the text may be confusing to the reader if they do not read the first 18 pages. Although not called a “chapter” in this book, the first 18 pages is a critical “chapter” to read. The first 18 pages lay the foundation for how to read the book, how to understand the linking of specific interventions to skill problem types, and provides an intervention chart for facilitating this reading and understanding. Many readers may be tempted to just jump right to a given section and pull out any intervention. Although there are many “cookbooks” to interventions, this is certainly not one of them if the reader attends to the first 18 pages.
As a professor of school psychology students with an expertise in academic and behavioral assessment and intervention, my professional judgment is that this text it is a strong resource for anyone interested in understanding and improving individual student outcomes by implementing evidence-based interventions with fidelity.

This is a beautiful book...

I bought it for my children, but as we read it before bedtime, I was struck by the beauty of this gentle book. The illustrations are watercolor renderings of the little lamb and his Shepherd. It takes each line of Psalm 23 and presents it in a manner that my three year old understands. Yet, the images combined with the words made me think of this familiar psalm in a whole new understanding. While it is easily a pre-school age book, it would also be a meaningful gift for any age, right up to adult, serving as a lovely reminder of God's unfailing love.

Beautiful Simplicity

Psalm 23 is one of the most beautiful and comforting passages in the Bible, and now Hans Wilhelm's The Lord is My Shepherd makes the full text to this Psalm readily accessible to children.

The greatness of Wilhelm's version is its simplicity. The text is paraphrased in kid-friendly language that clings closely to a modern translation. It is complete and accurate.

The illustrations are delightfully simple, sweet, and revealing. Throughout, we see a white sheep being cared for by a shepherd whose face we never see. The lamb runs merrily through a meadow, looks content in the arms of his shepherd, and is unafraid as he passes wolves. Text and illustrations, hand in hand, reveal the simple yet profound truth of the Psalm.

What I Like: Everything. I believe in exposing young children to the Word of God, and this book accomplishes that in a delightful way .

What I Dislike: Nothing.

My 14 month old's favorite book...

My sister gave this book to me for my baby shower. This book has been my daughter's favorite for months now. I love that the author presented the psalm in gentle terms with some of the most beautiful soft watercolor illustrations I have ever seen. I got on here to search for other books - I had hoped this was a series of Bible stories - and decided to write this (my first) review. I couldn't think of a thing I dislike about this book.

Autumn Williams has conducted Bigfoot research for 20 years. As the child of a family of long-term witnesses in Washington state, Autumn has focused her research on habituators - people who claim ongoing encounters with Sasquatch. She created OregonBigfoot.com as a central clearinghouse for Bigfoot reports in Oregon and a means to disseminate information as it comes across her desk. Oregon Bigfoot has since grown into a close-knit community of really wonderful folks from all across the country. A fairly light read into a very mysterious subject

Enoch is an interesting book if only for the story that it tells. The BFs are painted as real creatures with many human characteristics and many wild animal ones as well. Later on in the book their family, breeding, social and even ethnic characteristics are detailed. They are depicted as quite skittish, secretive and even violent when "Mike" does something out-of-line to surprise or intimidate them. The scene where he tried to take a picture of Enoch was sobering both in the speed and power displayed by the BF in striking out at "Mike" and then crushing the camera like a pack of smokes. YIKES! There is some discussion about BF DNA evidence and its comparison to human DNA and where it might fit into the primate spectrum or within the chimp-man divide but that's about it for empirical evidence offered. Other than that, there is no corroboration in support what-so-ever to any part of the story. "Mike" could have produced at least a few foot print photos, some hair, a picture of his beat-up face after his various BF run-ins, copies of the obviously large food receipts that he was spending on, some journal entries scanned into the book as figures, anything at all to support the story as more than anecdotal but nothing is offered. The middle chapters wander with whimsical and silly internal arguments the author was having with herself while writing it. The author includes a lot of draft material as filler in the middle and later chapters that might better have been trimmed out or edited to a higher level of presentation. You get the impression that much of the book was typed into the word processor once as draft and then never gone back to to clean up as final prose. Overall I found the story believable and the fact that the BFs are still depicted as essentially an unknown mystery is ok by me. Readers looking for deeper scientific analysis of empirical evidence (not) offered, pictures of foot prints, hair, bedding or anything else for that matter will probably be disappointed. If you are looking for a fairly light read into a very mysterious subject that offers some ostensibly deep but unsupported information on the BF subject, they will probably find Enoch an interesting albeit an undeterministic read.

A Study in Trust and Possibility. A Revealing Psychological Journey into a Great Mystery

Get it now! It will blow you away if you have an ounce of trust left in you. If you want to analyze scat and hair DNA remnants this may not be the book for you. Nonetheless, this book presents fascinating possibilities, and the author is of unquestionable sincerity. More than anyone at this time, Autumn Williams seems to have catalyzed a major change that is now running through to the core of Bigfooting. I have heard repeatedly expressed the sentiment that "proving" the Bigfoot/Sasquatch to the world would only endanger them and threaten their very survival. On her Oregon Bigfoot site and blog she has clearly delineated the reasons why decades of Bigfoot field research have largely failed to produce conclusive results. Autumn is forging a new attitude both toward the "Creatures" and the witnesses, recommending respect for both. This book offers more than the interesting, often humorous story of Mike, a loner who encounters and bonds with Skunk Apes somewhere in Florida; it will also teach you methodology in how to approach anecdotal accounts and deal with the difficulties witnesses face in relating their experiences. Long-term habituation scenarios are often scoffed at by the Bigfoot Community, and the public at large; but this book makes this one seem utterly convincing. Far from some kind of delusional believer or New-Age seeker of the "Forest Brothers," Autumn Williams is cool, collected, and logical in her approach. Her coming to know and trust the witness, Mike, parallels the process of Mike's gradual understanding of and bonding with this mysterious being. It is a trans-species interaction that quite likely will challenge your ideas of humanness, sentience and intelligence. If you have ever struggled with issues of belief and trust, this book may very well be about much, much more than Bigfoot to you. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I just finished this book and am very impressed. The reader must decide whether or not to suspend disbelief, and I decided to, for the sake of an enhanced reading experience. The details that Autumn Williams conveys (by way of her long-term witness Mike) are many and astonishing. Both she and Mike are very articulate so that their dual story really spellbinds. Aside from a whole bunch of proofreading oversights (which I assume will be corrected in a next edition), I have no criticism of the content; I even came to be persuaded by her reasons for believing Mike's account in the absense of "proof," and by much of her critique of the methodology of contemporary Sasquatch research. I have learned much from ENOCH: A BIGFOOT STORY and will incorporate this expanded awareness into my ongoing field research and into the new edition of my own book, IMPOSSIBLE VISITS: INTERACTIONS WITH SASQUATCH AT HABITUATION SITES. Currently, only a handful of books about long-term-witness (or "habituation") situations exist, but it is my hope that this nonfiction genre will quickly burgeon, soon building a solid infrastructure of knowledge prior to "the day of discovery"--when lengthy, persuasive video or a dead body is presented to the world--because on that day the media will seek to spike ratings by provoking hysteria among the general public. The key, then, will be for the millions of suddenly fascinated yet anxious people to have readily accessible sources to consult in order to learn of the astonishing subtlety, intelligence, even the civility, of this species. All credible knowledge gained by then, especially the respectful, highly textured accounts shared by long-term habituators, will probably make for the best barrier between Sasquatch and its would-be trophy hunters. With any luck, the contributions by these ordinary, non-scientist researchers will augment efforts toward establishing legislation protecting the species going forward. Best-case scenario: Though the first man to "bag" a Sasquatch will (inevitably) become rich and famous, the second, and all subsequent, will be thrown in jail for life. Autumn Williams deserves enormous credit for so insightfully advancing this cause.

A light yet thoughtful read

When a good deed done by James leads to Flora, James, and their two teenage daughters being invited to a fabulous villa in the south of France belonging to a famous opera singer, they jump at the chance to leave it all behind for a while. They exchange their everyday worries about the mortgage and their jobs and their future for a chance to leave it all behind and just relax. What they are not expecting is that their baggage from home can follow them anywhere.

James develops a school boy's crush on their famous host, Flora's past comes back to haunt her, and their relatives and their troubles join them in France, and suddenly their blissful holiday takes a not- so- blissful turn. Will their dream vacation turn into a nightmare?

Wish You Were Here was, at times, a blissful and fun retreat into the south of France with the Murray-Browns and their wacky friends and family members. I liked Flora and James and their daughters most times, but the supporting characters were the ones that really stood out to me, especially Flora's hippie mother who loves her family so much! I also really loved James's father, even though he didn't often take a starring role in the book. I didn't like Flora and James's daughter Amelia, who was selfish and spoiled, but I suppose that it is a reflection on how many of the kids of today act.

I'm a big fan of Catherine Alliott, but this wasn't my favourite book of hers so far. It started off pretty slow for me, and truthfully I didn't care much for Flora, James, or their children. Thankfully it picked up for me when I was about halfway through the story, and I started really enjoying the plot, and I definitely appreciated the ending.

Wish You Were Here was the story of one family's life-changing vacation in the south of France. It was a thought-provoking story about marriage and fidelity and parenthood and finding happiness in whatever stage of life you are in, and I enjoyed this light, engaging read. My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a copy for review.

A fun read with meaningful themes

I enjoyed this book. I read it quickly because it was fun yet still touched on serious themes. I really liked the characters and they were portrayed very well. I felt as though I was there with them in Provence :-)

I have grown with Catherine Alliott, we are similar age and I have had the same life changes as all the characters featured in her books, I really relate. Wish you were here was up to her usual brilliant standards, hilarious, meaningful, couldn't put it down.

I don't like writers that don't do their research!

After the first few pages I quit trying to read this book. The writer did NOT even do basic research for this book, there was no such word as luggage in that time period. I did not wait to find anymore mistakes like that. Yes, I am a history buff and it drives me craze when a writer does not take the time to research the time period they are trying to writing about. If anyone wants to read a good historical book, try Elizabeth Chadwick or Roberta Gellis.

I love this story!

I loved it! This is the first Scottish romance I've read and it has me hooked. The writing is top-notch with just the right amount of suspense. I love the main characters and can't wait to read the next book in the series - ROMANCE: The Highlander's Destiny: A Contemporary Scottish Romance (The Laird's Legacy Book 2).

Underwhelming, Unbelievable, and Perhaps Unfinished

Reader beware, light spoilers to follow.

This book was not a trailblazer in the plot department. A young English woman being tossed into an arranged marriage, only to be kidnapped by barbaric Scots...it's a fairly well-known trope. That in itself wouldn't have bothered me, it if had been well done. I don't terribly mind reading familiar plots. When I pick up romantic fiction, what I'm really looking for well-developed characters, believable relationships, and passion. This book failed on all counts.

We'll start with character development. Apparently, this author believes that ONE characteristic is enough of a foundation for the entire person to stand on. Lachlan has a tiny half-smile smirk. Gail has a big, boisterous laugh. That about sums up their characters. They weren't fleshed out enough. The story wasn't long enough, nor did it span enough time to fully realize the characters. Even the protagonist, Elena, seemed utterly generic. I never really got invested in her as a person. Honestly, I think the author was going for a cheap emotional connection by having Elena violently kidnapped and almost raped, hoping that those events alone would be enough to bond the reader to her. And speaking of her attacks...

I don't mind suspending reality for the sake of a story, if we're talking about fantasy elements (dragons, magic, etc.) However, I can't connect to a story that wants me to believe that a woman would fall in love with a man (AFTER ONE DAY) who led the attack that killed all her escorts and kidnapped her. It's just utterly unbelievable to me. Maybe if she had been there a long time and come to truly know these people (not just Lachlan) I could see it. It also bothered me (even struck me as a little...racist?) that all the Scots except for the hunky man were portrayed as barbarians, dirty and stupid and cruel. It didn't sit well with me. Something else completely unbelievable...no one would give a prisoner a weapon and then teach them how to use it! A day after kidnapping her! It's ridiculous. Lachlan had NO reason to believe that she wouldn't stab him at the earliest opportunity.

Finally, I felt this story lacked passion. This probably goes back to the fact that the story literally covers the span of 3 days. I just can't get on board with this romance unfolding so quickly. The two characters needed more time together. It would have been nice to have some chapters from Lachlan's perspective, to see how his feelings for Elena were developing. As far as Elena's passion for Lachlan, I'm sorry, but repeated descriptions of shudders and belly-warmth is not enough for me. There was some hint of passion during their fighting lesson, but it wasn't enough.

This was a quick read, but it still felt like a waste of my time. This feels like a very early rough draft that needs a ton of revision and addition to make it a palatable, enjoyable read.

Intuitive presentation of cookbook methods

I've used the first (1985) edition of this book. I borrowed it from the library and was able to go through it quickly and start sketching, for example, correct one-point and two-point perspective grids, renderings from plans, etc. I'd recommend borrowing the book for such a quick introduction, but not buying it if you're looking for a single perspective title for your library.

The limitation of the book is that it does not engage in any careful explanation (the diagrams are left to do the talking: they cleverly convey more than appears at first sight, but there are many things they simply cannot address). No one could learn from this book to UNDERSTAND how and why the practical tricks it presents work. For example, a method is described for determining and using a "measuring point," but you will not learn what this point actually represents, why it is located as it is, or by what magical process it can be used to make correct drawings. Maybe some would never miss such insights, but I feel that an artist should not use any tool or material without some basic understanding of how it works: if I'm simply ticking off the steps of a procedure 1-2-3, I am doing something very like clicking my point-and-shoot camera without an understanding of shutter speed, aperture, etc.

The relentlessly visual-cookbook nature of the book may also make it suitable for use after learning the principles of perspective: the more elaborate illustrations may serve as good applied examples or even inspiration for imaginative or imitative constructions.

basic perspective....

purchased this for class.. really useful, still use it for reference even after the class.. easy to follow and great examples in the book.. would recommend this for anyone needing help on perspective drawing.

a good book!

This book is all about perspective, it's a great book for art students.
it's straight forward, a lot of examples shown in here, since we are all visual arts students, it's just perfect.
I would recommend this book
I'm not so passionate about this book yet, because I haven't finish reading it, and I didn't have much time to read it carefully for the past few weeks.
I will say it's a great book, it has a lot of tips that get me thinking while I draw.
I got this book new, packaging and delivery were great!
