Nostalgia tech meets modern Open Source!
By D. Clark
I picked this book at an SF convention. It isn't SF though, this is real stuff, and interesting as well. I have been an Arduino fan for many years and have written many projects for myself and for others as a writer for Servo Magazine. I have read many Arduino "how to" books as well. This book is unique, and VERY different from your usual Arduino book. For one thing, many of these projects are NOT just simple "blink the LED" kind of things. Your first project will be making an Arduino Clone, but in keeping with the style of the book, not in the traditional way. The projects in "Junk Box Arduino" teach concepts and resurrect "ancient" marvels, like IDE hard drives and the venerable Z80 microcontroller (for you born after the late 1970's, look them up on Wikipedia.) Don't let that intro frighten you away however, Strickland goes into minute detail in his projects and you WILL learn everything you need to know about these technologies to be successful building them. The best part of all is that with all of these details, you still have room to grow these projects into your own custom work to solve your own problems. This book is fun, and nostalgic at the same time as it is being educational. Sure the tech Strickland uses is old (transistors and TTL chips), that is the "junk box" stuff, but new tech is based on these venerable ancestors and you can use some of these projects as stepping stones to move foreward on your own. Or, you can have fun turning your Arduino clone into an EEPROM pretending to be a Z80 CP/M computer, just for old times sake! If you have a desire to wander down memory lane, or just want to resurrect some junk from the basement to help with a pending project, this book just might be for you!
