The best book ever for writers!

I read this book years ago when I was just starting to write, and then loaned it out to a friend. Years later, when I began to write again, I realized that I had lost touch with the best book I'd ever read on writing and was able to find a used copy for this now-out-of-print classic. And now, upon rereading my copy, I am again overwhelmed by this man's genius. His advise is spot-on, and his way of explaining why is ALSO spot-on.
If you're a writer, buy everything this man ever wrote (only a few books)and keep them close to you when you sit down at the computer. You won't regret it.

One of the Two Best Books On Writing I've Ever Read!

I read this book in 1987. I have read a number of other books about writing, some very good, but for me, this one is one of the two best I've ever read on the subject (the other is King's "On Writing").

One of the things that this book does, as does King's, is explore not only the craft of writing (weed out adverbs, etc.) but also the emotional experience of being a writer. I frequently talk to groups about writing or teach seminars on the subject, and I always try to do the same thing for those writers that Provost did for me. I also quote the sentiment that he expresses in this book -- that "sometimes another writer will understand what the rest of the world will not." I don't think there's been a more evocative, succinct testament to the importance of fellowship...ever.

I know Provost has other books on the topic, and they are surely good, and recommended. But don't pass this one up. It's got game.

Should be on every writer's bookcase!

I'm a fan of Gary Provost. I love his conversational writing style. He says things in a way that makes them easy to grasp and apply to your own writing. This book was written in the 1980s but all of it still applies to writing today. The title alone is a lesson--Make Every Word Count. And he goes on to teach you exactly how to do that. His explanation of writing that works made me rethink my approach to writing. he has a section called "If The Writer is Seen at Work, The Writing Won't Work" that really made me understand that issue in writing. He sets out to communicate and he does a brilliant job doing that. He doesn't make writing obscure or difficult. He clarifies how to do it and do it well. I definitely recommend this book to all writers at any level of their careers. There are many gems in it worth discovering.

The Historian's Wizard of Oz synthesizes four decades of scholarly interpretations of L. Students of history and economics will find two great stories: the dramatic rise and fall of monetary populism and William Jennings Bryan and the original rendering of a childhood story that they know and love. This study draws on several worthy versions of the Oz-as-Populist-parable thesis, but it also separates the reading of Baum's book in this manner from Baum's original intentions. Despite an incongruence with Baum's intent, reading the story as a parable continues to provide a remarkable window into the historical events of the 1890s and, thus, constitutes a tremendous teaching tool for historians, economists, and political scientists. RANJIT S. DIGHE is Assistant Professor of Economics at the State University of New York at Oswego. His specialty is American macroeconomic history, and he has written extensively on American labor markets between the world wars.

Political and Financial Allegory in Baum's Classic.

This book is offered as a teaching tool on the history and economic issues of the 1890's.

Mr.Dighe chronicles the interpretations of "The Wizard of Oz" as imagery of politics and money by various writers starting with Henry Littlefield in 1964.

The author cautions that there are subtle differences between the movie and Mr. Baum's book. The color of Dorothy's shoes is one example.

Mr. Baum's political leanings are a relevant topic of this book. They are basically an unknown. Mr. Dighe suggests that Mr. Baum probably didn't intentionally write "The Wizard of Oz" as political/economic allegory. But the book fills that role surprisingly well!

The first chapter explains money and national finances in easy terms. Some of the subjects in that vein are; the gold standard, gold reserve, and fiat money. They are all efficiently defined.

The story of "The Wizard of Oz" is printed in this book accompanied by numerous footnotes that are educational and interesting. Those footnotes detail some of the interpretations from authors like Henry Littlefield, Hugh Rockoff, and Ranjit Dighe himself among others.

These interpretations are speculative, but some of them are glaringly obvious. The green in Oz's temple for the color of money is one.

He includes William Jennings Bryan's speech at the end of the book. I have mixed feelings on Mr. Bryan. While he advocated the federal income tax(I don't care for that)he has his spot in history that was well-earned by his presidential campaigns and eloquent speeches.

This book addresses a fascinating topic. The question of whether L.Frank Baum intended for his book to serve as an allegory for the politics of the 1890's is one that each reader will have to answer for themselves.

Excellent Classroom Source

Ranjit S. Dighe's coverage of Baum's Wizard of Oz as an allegory is well designed as a teaching source for Populism.

I found his chapter on the historical background of this period very helpful in understanding this complicated period. More importantly, the chapter that includes the original story with annotations that identify the symbolism is exactly what a researcher is looking for. References to Littlefield's interpretation and Bryan's "Cross of Gold" speech makes this book a complete source for introducing this parable to history or economic students.

Good background information

Great background on a subject that escapes most history textbooks. The author takes a "middle ground" and asserts that Baum is not really taking an active stance on the Gold/Silver standard, but merely using analogies from the political climate at the times. The theory makes sense, but a deep reading of the Wizard of Oz then seems to take on merely academic curiosity.

5 stars for the background of the story, but less 1 star for the seemingly academic (pointless??) analysis of this nice story as it relates to the Gold/Siver standard.

Of course, other writers have completely divergent opinions on Baum and his writings, so I would also get some books by those authors to even out the analysis a bit.

I prefer this Oxford World's Classics edition

Before buying this book, I read all of the reviews for the Penguin Classics version translated by Robin Campbell and I was convinced that I would enjoy reading Seneca. I was not disappointed. His moral letters are great, but I will not go into all of the reasons here since so many others have praised them for other versions already.

I would rather discuss why I chose to buy the Oxford World Classics edition instead of the Penguin. The biggest reason is the number of letters: Penguin includes 40 and Oxford includes 80. I believe that the Loeb Classical Library edition (3 vols.) includes all 124 letters, but those were translated in 1928 (almost word for word from Latin).

I also found the Oxford edition a little more readable, but I base this opinion on a comparison of only the first few letters that I could see from sample pages of the Penguin edition since I did not buy it. I may prefer the Oxford translation because it is more recent (2010 vs. 1969 for Penguin).

I preferred the notes in the Oxford edition too. Penguin has five or six pages of notes (mostly bibliographic references) for only the translator's introduction. Oxford includes 33 pages of explanatory notes on Seneca's letters themselves. Students of the classics may already be familiar with Roman traditions, famous men and other historical references, but I certainly appreciated these clarifications.

The Oxford edition also includes a brief summary (1-3 sentences) at the beginning of each letter. For example, the summary for letter 5 says, "On avoiding conspicuous austerity and the meaning of 'living according to Nature.' Adopting a severe lifestyle is one aspect of the wider issue of shunning the crowd, and actually withdrawing or retiring from public life raised in letters 7 and 8." Penguin does not have these summaries.

Whether you choose to read the Oxford, Penguin or any other edition of Seneca's letters, just be sure to read them. There's a reason why they continue to be read 2000 years later!

A phlegmatic artist of epistles

Although this isn't a complete collection of Seneca's letters, it includes a larger subset of the letters than other abridged collection, and Fantham's translation is among the best. The complete set of letters translated by Gummere is available in three volumes and published by Loeb. Fantham's translation is more readable than Gummere's.

It is worth noting that Seneca's writing is an important and valuable complement to Epictetus's writing. Reading Epictetus, it is easy to get the impression that Stoicism is a "sour grapes" philosophy, only really suitable for the sick and impoverished, or those consumed by fear of such. Reading Seneca, it is easy to get the impression that it is only suitable for wealthy trust-fund children trying to "find meaning" in life. Really, the two are different applications of the same philosophy, shown in different circumstances, and I think it's important to see it from both angles. Which angle each emphasizes is not at all surprising given their respective backgrounds.

Fantham suggests in her introductory essay that Seneca is something of a hypocrite in this regard, but I think that's an overstatement. Seneca may not have been a particularly good Stoic role model, although different historical accounts present him more or less sympathetically. There are plenty of good, interesting biographies of Seneca out there. However, evaluating his writing based on his biography is an example of a tu quoque fallacy in any case, and one should always strive to avoid this.

A worthy copy of Seneca

Elaine Fantham is a very knowledgeable scholar in this field, and the book's very insightful introduction and notes reflects her knowledge. The introduction provides a rich contextual background for the letters, and the notes make valuable contributes which sometimes instantly clarify points of confusion. Each letter is also preceded by a short summary of the central doctrines. As a student, I found the summaries a very helpful and accurate guide to my readings.

I do not personally read Latin, but my professor, D.S Hutchinson, who has worked with Latin texts for many years spoke highly of the translation, stating that it is revealing, artistic and accurate.

My only complain for the text is that it is not a complete collection of Seneca's letters. This is an unfortunate lack for such a worthwhile book, but even so, the 80 letters that form this collection are all quality pieces.

More than a book, a transmission of knowledge

This book is a one of the few "must reads" for almost anyone who enjoys eastern spiritual thought and the upliftment of consciousness.

This is a unique personal autobiography by Paramahansa Muktananda.
In the pages of this book he transmits his experiences directly to the reader in a very special way that only some great teachers can.

This book does not deal with the mundane details of Swami Muktananda's life nor does it deal much with the details of his teacher Swami Nityananda's life; more of that sort of thing can be found in "Meditation Revolution" by Douglas Renfrew Brooks, or by Muktananda's earliest biographer Swami Prajnanananda.

What this book does do is to transmit some of Paramahansa Muktananda's consciousness to the reader in a unique way, giving the reader some direct experience of Muktananda's life and his Awareness.

This book is an amazing contribution to human consciousness and I can only give it the best recommendation.

Update: Wow, I see the price, this is a first edition I guess.

Book Needs To Be Proofread.

While the book does a good job on teaching basic Database concepts and provides excellent examples to fortify your learning, there is one big problem.

The book is one gigantic error. The sample problems and exercises are missing code and syntax making exercises very hard to follow and having the reader fill in the missing pieces for the examples to be correct and consistent.

For someone new to database, this book will prove to be a big mess of confusion since consistency and order are missing with the hands-on work.

This book should go back to the publisher or author and be proofread and have all the sample problems, exercises and hands-on work verified to work because I can guarantee that half of them will not if copied from this text.

Sound theoretical foundations!

For anyone interested in learning the database theory, this is a must-read book. The author did an excellent job in explaining difficult E-R relationships, data structures, system catalog, UML diagrams, and the components of distributed systems. The lab exercises can be implemented by using the commercial database software: Oracle 9i, MS SQL Server, MS Access, MySQL and MS Visio. This book is very practical and much better than other database textbooks.

If I hadn't had to read it for a class I wouldn't have

This book reads like a technical manual which wouldn't be bad if it weren't supposed to be an entry level book. The first five chapters include a history of the different database types, and read with the same phenomenal pace as a 300 page calculus equation.

I found myself constantly falling asleep while reading the book and then having to go back whole pages to try to decipher what I had already been reading. Eventually I started reading it but only looking for key text and not truly absorbing the material presented.

This book was chosen by an instructor for a class I am taking. This book has convinced me not to change my major to Database Administration. I have gone through the effort of reading other source material on SQL to be able to peform the exercises and take the tests required for the class.

If you happen across this book and decide to try to read it, skip to chapter six and that should be the only chapter you actually need for most reasons that would bring you to the book.

I am an avid reader and always read the full text for any class, never skimming or just using the index to take tests. This is the absolute worst text book I have ever been asked to try to get through.

Some familiar titles, many more that look to be true hidden gems.

This book is a fantastic "viewer's guide" to some of the best "cult classic" movies. The list includes some that many people have heard of, such as Pink Flamingos and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, to more obscure offerings, such as Freaks and Two Lane Blacktop. Perhaps I've just watched more "cult" films, but I did wonder about the inclusion of some films in this book, such as Last Tango in Paris, Easy Rider, or Up in Smoke. These three films, along with several others, are fairly "mainstream" in today's eyes, so I personally wouldn't consider them a "cult" movie - however, the author does give a good explanation of the criteria for inclusion in this book. Each entry includes the name of the movie, director, executive producer, producer, screenwriter, cinematography, music, editors, run time, color or b&w, cast, and synopsis. Stills from the movies are included in the text. The author presents a very good synopsis, I actually learned some things about movies that I have seen many times. All in all, I think this is an excellent book, I while I have seen many of the movies on this list, there are some that I have added to my "must watch" list.

Awesome selection of films, ranging from obvious to very obscure with great essays and interesting facts in each chapter. Great film read!

Great selection

I received a digital copy to review from netgalley. This is my honest opinion.

I read this along with Danny Peary's Cult horror films book. I really enjoyed both of them! He chooses films from a wide variety of time periods. Each film listed includes release information, photos, an in depth synopsis an essay from the author. Most are films I already enjoy, so his essays were a lot of fun for me to read. I was happy to find and be reminded in some cases, of movies I have yet to watch. For me personally, it was too also nice to read about the films I still need to see, but some may prefer to use it as a guide and read after they've watched.

Color photos would have been nice when possible, but that didn't deter my enjoyment.

I would recommend this book to cinephiles, cult fans and people looking for movies that are different from the usual blockbusters.

Definitely suffers from middle-book syndrome

With Morningside Fall, Jay Posey's Legends of the Dustwalker saga is beginning to remind me of Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Saga. Both series started off strong, with first novels that really impressed me with their imagination and their storytelling, and which guaranteed I would keep on reading. Unfortunately [minor spolier here], the second volume in both series suffers from the absence of the protagonist who made the first book so compelling.

That absence made this a frustrating reading experience for me. The world building was taken to the next level, the threat of the Weir was far better explored, and we finally get something of a primary antagonist in the final portions of the book. In addition, the writing was just as solid as it was in the first book, contributing to an enhancement of the overall atmosphere. There really was a lot to enjoy and appreciate here, but Wren is no Three, and that's a very big 'but' indeed.

I didn't like Wren much in the first book, and I didn't come to like him any better here. He's too innocent, too precocious, and too vulnerable. I wasn't necessarily looking for him to stand up and become a hero, but I was hoping he would serve some purpose other than to be the typical kid who needs to be rescued. He just rubs me the wrong way, leaving me exasperated and anxious to move on to the next scene that doesn't center on him. As for his mother, I really liked the darkness and the edge of Cass in the first book, but at lot of that seems blunted here. Sadly, it seems as if she's just not as interesting without Three there to challenge her on a personal and intellectual level.

It's not a bad read, and the last 100 or so pages are worth sticking it out for, but it was a long, slow, difficult read getting to that point. I found myself skimming in places, and getting tired of all the walk-on auditions to replace Three as Wren's guardian. Morningside Fall definitely suffers from middle-book syndrome, adding to the issue of trying to replace a protagonist, but it ends with enough promise to make a third book a likely-to-read, if not quite a must-read.

The Short Review

I really liked this book. It has a lot to offer, and I think it’ll appeal to a very wide audience. It has the action and adventure I associate with a good western-themed novel, and it also has some really interesting science fiction and fantasy elements. I found the front end of the book to be a little slow, but once it takes off, it’s a real nail-biter.

This is a 4 to a 4-1/2* novel, in my opinion. Almost ranked up there among my favorites, but not quite.

The Long Review

Before I begin the actual review, I want to make a note for potential readers: Read book one, Three, first. If you’ve already read Three, you might want to consider re-reading it before diving into Morningside Fall. I know some readers will happily dive into the middle of a series and figure things out as they go, but this novel has a good number of references to Three.

This isn’t a bad thing. Jay Posey doesn’t spend a great deal of time covering old ground. I like this about the novel, because I get frustrated when there is too much exposition regarding what happened in a previous novel. Some readers might find this disconcerting, however.

I’m going to start with the one thing I viewed as a flaw in this book before I wax eloquent about all of the things I really enjoyed about this novel.

I found the start of this novel a little slow for my liking. It took me a couple of chapters before I really got sucked into the story.

Part of this is my fault.

Wren is a young boy–younger than ten years old. He’s in the unfortunate position of being Governor of Morningside. This dichotomy of age, role, and maturity level threw me for a loop. Sometimes, Wren is exceedingly mature and wise for his age. It strained my suspension of disbelief quite a bit. Then there are the moments where Wren acts exactly like I expect a child of his age to behave. This also exists in Three, though I found it was to a lesser extent.

I don’t usually read a lot of books where one of the heroes of the novel is so young–especially as a POV character. But, Posey does a really good job balancing these bursts of wisdom and maturity with Wren’s behavior as a child. Wren has circumstances, and a lot of them.

He’s a good character.

It just took me longer than I like to get behind him and get used to how he is portrayed in Morningside Fall.

With the exception of my personal issues with Wren, the characters in Morningside Fall are what really make this novel stand out. They’re different. They’re unusual. They are interesting. Posey’s portrayal of all of the secondary characters is what really brought this book together.

When combined with the plot, featuring problems created by the characters and problems from outside influences, it’s a really powerful combination. After the first quarter or so of the book, it becomes a real nail-biter. It took me several sittings to finish the book, and the closer to the end I got, the grumpier I got about having to go to bed. I ended up losing a lot of sleep one night to finish because I couldn’t go to sleep wondering what would happen next.

I like when a book does that to me.

What really drew me to this book was the mix of elements. It’s post-apocalyptic. It’s a western in styling. It’s science fiction–sometimes rather hard science fiction. It’s a bit of a fantasy, too. The blend of fantastical elements with the science fiction ones, which are in turn harnessed to the western post-apocalyptic setting is a matter of brilliance on Posey’s part. The setting is a character, and by the time the novel ended, I felt like I had walked through the desolation right along with Wren and the other characters.

In closing, I want to mention one more thing: I specifically avoided spoilers telling what this story is about. This is the type of story where I feel spoiling the events–even the little things–will really take away from the reading of the book. Little things matter in this novel, and the impact of a single conversation or a small event is often huge.

This is definitely a book I’ll re-read again. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys a young hero, an action adventure, science fiction, post-apocalyptic, and soft fantasy. I think because this novel so seamlessly melds these elements together, it’s a great introduction series for those wanting to try a hybrid novel out.

Morningside Fall defies genre in all of the right ways. This book isn’t quite one of my absolute favorite novels out there, but it’s close — 4 to 4-1/2 * close.

A great follow up to Jay Posey's debut, Three! This is a must read!

If you liked Jay Posey's first book, Three, - and from the looking at the reviews, most of you did - you will like Morningside Fall. His writing style continues to intrigue and captivate, pulling you into the story and bringing the characters to life. The plot is unpredictable and Posey does a fantastic job of setting the tempo and pace of the story.

I continue to enjoy Posey's style of dialogue and character development. The characters seem true to life and I feel like I know each of them - their demeanor and nuances, their strengths and their flaws. Unlike Three, I don't feel like there's one primary hero or heroine, but that's also true to life, and gives the story a sense of reality.

The world remains a mystery, and I like that. It's not about the world, it's about the story, the characters, the overarching themes. Morningside Fall is a great Book 2 of 3, and does an excellent job of setting up the third installment and conclusion to the Legends of the Duskwalker Trilogy.

It's not as much of a quick-read as Book 1, but the slowed tempo through the middle of the book provides a fantastic payoff at the end. And by fantastic I mean an agonizing wait for Book 3. As with the conclusion of Three, I look forward to more. A lot more!

Highly recommended. A must read.

A great book that every christian should read. It highlights the great need for all of us to be real and let Jesus bring the healing that he lovingly desires to do, to make us whole.
For too long we have failed to hear messages that following Jesus is a life of being transformated into his likeness not just attend church and hearing messages that make us feel good.
This book highlights it can be very painful to face our past but we will not be the person Jesus calls us to be with out being healed and made whole.
Even if you don't have a painful past this book gives great understanding and compassion for other people.
