Book Needs To Be Proofread.

While the book does a good job on teaching basic Database concepts and provides excellent examples to fortify your learning, there is one big problem.
The book is one gigantic error. The sample problems and exercises are missing code and syntax making exercises very hard to follow and having the reader fill in the missing pieces for the examples to be correct and consistent.
For someone new to database, this book will prove to be a big mess of confusion since consistency and order are missing with the hands-on work.
This book should go back to the publisher or author and be proofread and have all the sample problems, exercises and hands-on work verified to work because I can guarantee that half of them will not if copied from this text.

Sound theoretical foundations!

For anyone interested in learning the database theory, this is a must-read book. The author did an excellent job in explaining difficult E-R relationships, data structures, system catalog, UML diagrams, and the components of distributed systems. The lab exercises can be implemented by using the commercial database software: Oracle 9i, MS SQL Server, MS Access, MySQL and MS Visio. This book is very practical and much better than other database textbooks.

If I hadn't had to read it for a class I wouldn't have

This book reads like a technical manual which wouldn't be bad if it weren't supposed to be an entry level book. The first five chapters include a history of the different database types, and read with the same phenomenal pace as a 300 page calculus equation.
I found myself constantly falling asleep while reading the book and then having to go back whole pages to try to decipher what I had already been reading. Eventually I started reading it but only looking for key text and not truly absorbing the material presented.
This book was chosen by an instructor for a class I am taking. This book has convinced me not to change my major to Database Administration. I have gone through the effort of reading other source material on SQL to be able to peform the exercises and take the tests required for the class.
If you happen across this book and decide to try to read it, skip to chapter six and that should be the only chapter you actually need for most reasons that would bring you to the book.
I am an avid reader and always read the full text for any class, never skimming or just using the index to take tests. This is the absolute worst text book I have ever been asked to try to get through.
