About the Author
Norman Tyler, FAICP, is faculty (retired) and former director of the Urban and Regional Planning program at Eastern Michigan University. He also has taught at the University of Michigan and Penn State University. He is a member of the College of Fellows with the American Institute of Certified Planners and a registered architect. He has served on the board of the Michigan Association of Planning, the Michigan Historic Preservation Network, the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and a founding member of the Ann Arbor Preservation Alliance. Tyler is co-author of two other books: Historic Preservation: An Introduction to Its History, Principles, and Practice (2009), and Greek Revival in America: Tracing its architectural roots to ancient Athens. He has given numerous presentations on topics including historic preservation, downtown revitalization, transportation planning, economic development, and Internet applications for community planning.�

Great reference for planning commissioners, students, and new professionals in the field!

An excellent tour through the world of community planning and economic development. This is the textbook I wish my professor had used when I signed up for that intro course in college!
Staying far away from planning buzzwords, the authors have managed to provide a thorough but highly readable text covering the planning profession, as well as the many areas of specialization included within it. The book is aimed at the college textbook market, but is dense with ideas and examples which make it a great reference for planning commissioners and new professionals in the field to keep nearby.
Tyler and Ward's book teaches the history of urban planning and evolution of planning theory within a practical context. Discussions of classical concepts of city building and urban design blend with practical applications and examples for today's planners.
Topics too often neglected in other planning textbooks are covered here, including planning for rural communities, capital improvements planning, and local economic development strategies. This book also offers the best chapter on zoning and land use/land development regulations that I have found anywhere.

It provides much historical context and I enjoy that aspect of it

As an Urban Planning major, I am required to read many texts about community development. This text was very interesting and focused on some of the architects and planners that changed the direction of planning in the U.S. It provides much historical context and I enjoy that aspect of it. Great book and an easy read. Good condition.
