Captain Hugh McManners went in on the first British Special Forces combat mission to land on East Falkland, in preparation for the Royal Navy landings on the Islands. The gripping narrative is Hugh’s first-hand account of this most famous of modern British military operations. His position made him part of the planning of this operation as well as one of the field operators – a unique perspective. Hugh describes, with perception and an often a wry sense of humour, life in his five-man Special Forces team, fighting with the Special Boat Squadron.

After near-disastrous small boat ops in heavy seas, gruelling long clearance reconnaissance missions, and tense night helicopter insertions, Hugh’s team finish up on their own, concealed while surrounded by enemy troops, twenty kilometres behind enemy lines. From this very exposed position, they carry out night-firing missions using naval gunships, to destroy Argentine artillery guns, missiles and radars. These targets must be destroyed before the enemy can use them to sink ships, or stop the British Commandos and Paras as they consolidate in the mountains ready for the final set-piece battle.

Then, as the British artillery comes within range, McManners’ team also fire by day. This proves critical, as the Paras and Commandos are heavily shelled while fighting their way into the Argentines’ defensive ring of steel.

This new ebook edition includes a new 2014 introduction, plus the Introductions from each of the three earlier editions, from 1984, 1987 and 2002. These reveal the failures of the British Ministry of Defence post-Falklands and then in the first Gulf War.

About the Author
Hugh McManners was Sunday Times Defence Correspondent for 5 years and is a television producer and presenter. He was brought up in Tasmania and New South Wales and educated at Magdalen College School, Oxford and Oxford University. He went into the Army in 1972, and joined 148 Commando Observation Battery in 1978. He was mentioned in despatches for his service in the Falklands War.

A solid three stars: could have been four but for the personal ramblings of a clearly disaffected person.

This would be a four star book but for the rant at the beginning of the book in which the author slams the MoD over and over. He might have some valid points, but it just comes across as bitter and immature, when the book itself is witty and sometimes enthralling. I'd recommend skipping the pre amble and go to the first chapter. A decent book with some good humour, interspersed - as with any war - with a good deal of tragedy. It does make you wonder reading this book that if the Argentine army had been half as courageous and well trained as their Air Force what the outcome might have been.
I knew little about the role of a military soldiers' role as a forward observation operative, but this portrays it well for the lay person.
Worth a read once you get past the whinging.
One thing the author does do well is convey the importance of supporting soldiers who have been through a traumatic time and the need for proper communications, it's just a shame this is a bit lost at the beginning.

"Falklands Commando" is Captain Hugh McManners' well-written memoire of his service as a commando forward observer with the British Army in the short, fiercely contested 1982 war with Argentina over the remote Falkland Islands.

The sudden Argentine invasion of the Falklands took Britain by surprise. McManners captures the controlled chaos of the departure of an expeditionary force to the South Atlantic to retake the islands. At sea, his small party had limited opportunities to train and prepare aboard over-crowded ships. Once off the Falklands, horrendous weather, difficult terrain, and the Argentine military itself created additional challenges to getting ashore and coming to grips with the enemy.

With more than a little understated humor and much fascinating personal detail, McManners describes the operations ashore, as his team leap-frogged across the islands, calling in naval gunfire in support of special operations forces. His narrative columinates with the British Army in command of the heights above Port Stanley and the Argentine military hopelessly trapped.

The Falkslands War is a long way back in the rear view mirror, but "Falklands Commando" has plenty to offer in the way of lessons learned for war on an austere budget in a remote location. It is highly recommended to students of expeditionary warfare.

No Adjectives Left

The Short Story: This is the best software development book I have ever read. By miles. Or, in deference to Mr. Seeman, in kilometers. Stop. Buy this book. It will change how you think, how you reason, how you sleep at night. See you in a year, we will both be smarter.

The Long Story: I bought this book last year. I can't remember exactly why I bought it, but I suspect that it had something to do with intellectual intimidation and the frightening title. I come from a non-OO background, but I am too young to get through the next 20 years without dealing with the reality of OO prevalence in small (i.e. numerous) projects. I had 2 choices ... start at the bottom or start at the top. Believe me, I chose the latter with this book.

I'm not going to explain the content in every chapter, simply because other reviewers have already done the job as I would have. Read Mr. T. Anderson's fine review if you need that kind of detail. Instead, I will talk about the effect that this book had had on how I think.

Chapter 2 is the velvet sledgehammer in the face. I read along with the case study, nodding my head and exercising my (in retrospect, tiny) brain as Seeman describes how "Mary" and "Jens" go about building a layered application. I'm thinking, yes Mary and Jens, this is what the magazines, blog articles, and dime-a-dozen gurus are saying regarding the construction of layered application. Seeman then dissects the "layered" application. Actually, he doesn't dissect it; he tears it to shreds and stamps all over it. Brilliantly. It's truly scary to read this chapter. You will feel like a complete novice at the end of it. You then have two choices ... (1) reject this stuff as abstract, ivory tower nonsense, or (2) put on your big-boy-pants.

Having lived with this book for almost a year, this is how I suggest you use it:
1. Read from Part 1 through Part 3.
2. Stop. Think. Cry at how embarrassed you feel at the end of Part 1 Chapter 2.
3. Read Part 2 again.
4. Stop. Think. Cry at how happy you feel now that you've lifted yourself beyond 99% of .NET developers. Beyond 99% of software professionals, period.
5. Do some "poor-man's DI" exercises.
6. Read only the introductory sections of each chapter within Part 4.
7. Pick a DI container in Part 4 that appeals to you based on the previous bullet, read its Part 4 chapter, and spend 1-2 months playing with it.
8. Revisit Parts 2 and 3 on a regular basis as references.
9. Don't think about sauces or Fowlerisms.

Criticisms: Very, very, few. I do not think it's too "wordy" at all. Any repetition is done with the realization that this stuff is really, really, hard for most of us. But yes, any mention of nonsense about "Anemic Domain Models" normally sets my blood boiling and warrants an immediate docking of at least 1 star. I can't dock a star from this book. It's that good. It's written by a mildly (but not offensively) dogmatic Danish guy who talks about sauces in every chapter. I like my Filets Mignons dry, thank you very much. And still, at the end of the day ... this is best software development book I have ever read. By far. By miles. By kilometers ...

Must read for .NET Devs

I have never written a review for Amazon before but I want to take the time here to give major props to the author for this quality book on Dependency Injection. This is easily in the top 2 of software development books that I have read. (The other being R. Martin's Agile Principles, Patterns, and Practices in C#)

I have been using DI successfully for several years, yet I was able to learn an enormous amount about the topic from this book. Explanations of DI principles and related patterns such as Decorator really clicked for me. Read this book and you will understand how to develop loosely coupled software components. Excellent code examples in C#. The section on object composition in MS frameworks like ASP.NET MVC and WCF is an extremely valuable resource. The footnotes will direct you to very interesting reading for an even deeper dive. I could go on.

I highly recommend this book for .NET developers.

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome, Awesome, Awesome...

Uhg. Sometimes my ability to be a complete ignoramus really annoys me. When I first saw this book on the upcoming list of books to be published I thought, "That sucks, I just got done reading Dependency Injection by Dhanji R. Prasanna last year. I don't need to read the .NET version", and so I ignored this book.

As time went on I saw all the great reviews coming out about the book and it made me curious. A buddy of mine had purchased it and I know that Manning gives ebooks with there book purchases, so I asked to borrow it. I ordered the book the next day.

I have nothing bad to say about Dependency Injection by Dhanji R. Prasanna, it was a great book. The difference is this one spoke my language of choice, .NET. It made the read so much better for me. Plus all the coverage of the popular DI Containers for .NET rocks.

This book is broken down into 4 parts the first part introduces DI. Part two is a catalog of patterns, anti-patterns, and refactorings. Part three covers Object Composition, Lifetime Management, and Interception. Part four covers all the popular DI .NET Containers which include Castle Windsor, StructureMap, Spring.NET, Autofac, Unity, and MEF.

One of the coolest things about the book is that it uses poor man's DI in the first 3 parts of the book to teach you how it all works, and then covers the popular DI .NET Containers in details to help you be more productive.

Coverage of the popular DI .NET Containers is nice deep coverage which also highlights the advantages and disadvantages of each one. Each popular DI .NET Container gets its own chapter. There are also some nice feature and lifestyle comparison charts to help you zero in on which DI Container will fit your needs.

The chapter on Object Composition is pretty cool too. It include coverage of console applications, ASP.NET MVC, Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Presentation Foundation, ASP.NET (Web Forms), and PowerShell.

The chapters on patterns and anti-patterns are a really big help in making sure you are using DI correctly. The patterns covered include Constructor Injection, Property Injection, Method Injection, and Ambient Context. The anti-patterns covered include Control Freak, Bastard Injection, Constrained Construction, and Service Locator. Both include nice code samples.

The chapter on DI refactoring covers mapping runtime value to abstractions, working with short-lived dependencies, resolving cyclic dependencies, dealing with constructor over-injection, and monitoring coupling.

This book is packed with diagrams that help you visualize the topic at hand. The author includes just the right amount.

Over all I found this author's writing style made the book a nice cover to cover read, but I will also be keeping it near to use as a reference. I have been on projects that use Castle Windsor, StructureMap, Unity, and MEF, so having coverage of each handy will be nice.

All the downloadable code is very well organized and usable.

This book is not only about DI, it is about proper object oriented programming. Every .NET architect and developer should read this book.

We love this book!

My daughter and I have really enjoyed going through the book, learning about prairie cooking and the real Ingalls family! I love filling my kitchen with old tools of the trade so to speak and am now keeping my eye out for things found in the book. It's a real treat and learning experiance to make some of these recipes with the kids knowing this is what some of the early settlers ate.

According to Foucault, since some features of this Christian hermeneutics of the subject still determine our contemporary “gnoseologic” self, then the genealogy of the modern subject is both an ethical and a political enterprise, aiming to show that the “self” is nothing but the historical correlate of a series of technologies built into our history. Thus, from Foucault’s perspective, our main problem today is not to discover what “the self” is, but to try to analyze and change these technologies in order to change its form.�

Michel Foucault�(1926–84) was one of the most significant social theorists of the twentieth century, his influence extending across many areas of the humanities and social sciences. Graham Burchell is a freelance research and translator and has translated several volumes of Foucault’s lectures. Great Book!!

Great Book! Probably one of the first to buy it!! I just wish they made it a little bigger so it had bigger font! Also they have all the guidelines and step by step as too what you can encounter. Only thing I would wish is that if they explained the calculations a little more detailed! Aside from that it's a great book!! I passed my exam! On my exam it was mostly the Federal agencies and OSHA ... 10-20 calculations on Pills and Suspensions also brush up on your Sigs like ss = 1/2 ... Brand to generic but as to what they do or cure... Mostly it was like Lisinopril... Omeprazole Etc... Brush up on the entire body of the needle and laminar hoods and as to how long to keep them on!

One of the best

I'm not finished with it yet, but I've read enough of it that -- even if I never read another word -- it was worth the effort.
Prior to my purchase of this book, I read 'A Teaching Seminar with Milton H. Erickson' which was a good book for getting to know the man and his personality. So, I'm glad I read it first. But this book is far and away the better book. It is the one to read as a training manual and in-depth study of Erickson and his techniques.

This was the very first book I read, many years ago, by Milton Erickson et al. I don't know what happened to it. but I just received another copy---hardcover, in excellent condition, and I've started re-reading it. And now I'm getting even more out of it than I did the first time!

About the Author
Denise Denniston became a teacher of the Transcendental Meditation Program in 1971. Since then, she has taught the TM Program in Omaha, Nebraska; Los Angeles, California; and New York City. She has worked at the United States National Center for the Transcendental Meditation Program and at the International Capitol of the Age of Enlightenment in Europe. She holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Education from the University of California at Berkeley and is a faculty member at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa where she serves as chair the department of the Science of Creative Intelligence and Dean of the College of the Science of Creative Intelligence. She is married to Joseph Gerace and has a daughter, Marisa Bagambhrini.

Barry Geller, who illustrated this book, was head of the design department of Maharishi International University Press, the international production facility for the Transcendental Meditation Movement in Europe. He now operates his own freelance advertising, illustration, and design business.

This is not a how-to book ...

I have to admit, I was expecting a how-to on Transendental Meditiation. This book is 308 pages on why you should pay $1000 to go to a center and learn TM.
TM may be wonderful, but the book actually made me feel wary. I was originally drawn to TM by news reports of lowered blood pressure and stress reduction in practicers The book's emphasis on all the wonderful things you get, with very little effort, and very little detail on how, smacked, just a bit, of secret societies and too-good-to-be-true, $1000, instant-fixs.
And, to be honest, I wasn't looking for a sales tool, I was looking for a how-to, so I feel a little silly and a little duped.

I have not read the book but I took TM many years ago and I thought it was expensive then, and that was about $250.00. I practiced TM and did have some excellent results. I can never reveal my mantra but I can tell you that the technique is very simple and you learn how to do it in about 5 minutes. The rest is just performing what you learned as a meditation. I have since gone on to other types of meditation also. But basically, this is a mantra meditation. You can use the universal mantra "Aum" or "OM" for this purpose without spending $1,000. You are paying this money just to get your own mantra which is not to be revealed to anyone.
Meditation was meant to be a spiritual experience, bringing you closer to oneness with the all pervading consciousness which is God. Any real meditative goal is really this process. During the course of doing this, there are many benefits, including those discussed by TM. A truly spiritual lesson should not be an opportunity for gouging people. $1,000 is absurd and I have to question the motivations of the organization. Something is not right about that. Ultimately, spiritually-related matters should be free, but understandably, it is not feasible. However, charging excess sums of money is a sin and goes against the spiritual laws.
So, if you want to benefit from this meditation, you should sit quietly with back erect and mentally chant your mantra (no specific method is required, just let it come naturally) (e.g., "OM") over and over again. You allow your mind to quiet gently without stress or pressure. Concentrate on the "OM" but don't strain. If you find your mind wandering during the meditation, just gently realize and return to the mantra. Do this for 20 minutes, twice a day. Preferably, in the morning upon awakening and in the afternoon before dinner. Do this, you have saved yourself $1,000 and you are contributing to the spiritual evolution of this planet.
If you are truly seeking a spiritual avenue, I suggest you check out the Self Realization Fellowship, reading the Autobiography of a Yogi first. If this doesn't awaken a spiritual desire, then nothing will.

TM Will Improve Your Life

I'm not sure why Amazon allows people to review a book they have not purchased or even read, but that's the internet, I guess. This is a very good basic book on benefits of transcendental meditation. If you have practiced TM, you will not find the fee unreasonable. The instructors should get paid for their time and much of the money goes to the foundation. The foundation is sponsoring programs for Military Veterans, At-Risk Students, Homeless Rehabilitation and other very worthy populations. If you do TM regularly, you will agree that this is the best investment you have made in yourself. TM is easy and will make dramatic improvements in all aspects of your life. I also recommend reading Transcendence by Norman E. Rosenthal
