Hans van der Hoeven, MSc is a senior lecturer in ERP, Business Management and Accounting at Avans University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. He coordinates the use of Dynamics NAV at Avans University of Applied Sciences, and takes a wider role on the Dutch steering committee of NAV-using universities. He is also a member of the Microsoft Dynamics Academic Alliance Advisory Council for EMEA. His several books in Dutch have sold well. Mack Wilberg is the Music Director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He was appointed Music Director in March 2008, having served as Associate Music Director since May 1999. He is a former professor of music at Brigham Young University, where he received his bachelors degree; his masters and doctoral degrees are from the University of Southern California. In addition to his conducting responsibilities he is active as apianist, choral clinician, composer, arranger, and guest conductor throughout the United States and abroad. In addition to the many compositions he has written for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, his works have been performed by artists such as Renee Fleming, Frederica von Stade, Bryn Terfel, The Kings Singers, and narrators Walter Cronkite and Claire Bloom. Wilbergs arrangements and compositions are performed and recorded all over the world. With their grandeur, energy, and craftsmanship, they inspire performers and audiences everywhere.

I quite enjoyed Townsend’s first book, Queen City Gothic, delving into Cincinnati’s most infamous unsolved cases. I think I like Notorious even better than Gothic, just for the closure. Here, Townsend peels back the mysteries and exposes these fascinating murder cases to light.

Queen City Notorious is the perfect mix of crimes and time periods throughout the 20th Century. For each case, Townsend describes what happened and puts the case in historical context with other major events occurring around the world. He then describes the players in each drama, what happened and why. For some crimes in the book, though ostensibly solved, there are still major facts or actions that are unknown. Townsend expertly speculates what may have happened and who probably was—and wasn’t—involved.

The first case is one of the most horrific—in 1910, Alice Van Zandt is roasted to death over a gas oven by her husband, left to die while their small child tottled around in the next room. The most outright shocking case was failed businessman Vinton Perin shooting his wealthy mother-in-law Frances Rawson in her Clifton mansion in 1924. Today that case would cause a national sensation and rock every tabloid on the market. It’s almost funny how local papers didn’t know how to report the case of Betty Butler, a black lesbian, drowning her love rival Evelyn Clark. They couldn’t report many aspects of the story in “family” papers in 1952.

One of the outright strangest stories is when all-American college athlete Jack Rauss slew Goldie Cunningham and her disabled husband James in 1961. It seems he went to visit them and Goldie said something bad about his mother, her close friend, which Jack couldn’t abide. There’s even a bad-boy/girlfriend love triangle murder. Bobby Abbot was going with Alice Ewing in 1964, but he tricked nursing student Wanda Cook into coming to his room at the old Sheraton Gibson Hotel. When she wouldn’t succumb to his desires, he killed her. Alice helped him put the body in a trunk and ship it cross-country. When they were arrested, they couldn’t blame each other fast enough.

Townsend ends the book with another odd passion crime: the murder of Dr. Jane Shutt by her adopted daughter Barbara. When Barbara learned her adopted parents were separating and she would have to move out and make her own way, she lost her mind and murdered her mother most viciously. There are many other gruesome and unusual cases in the book.

You don’t have to be from Cincinnati to marvel at these crimes of passion and gain—you can enjoy the sharp police work and seeing the bad guys get what’s coming regardless of where these crimes happened. Townsend unfolds these stories layer by layer, unraveling the mystery into a just, if not always satisfying, conclusion. Once you get your teeth into one of these stories you won’t be able to stop reading them all. A must-read for true crime buffs and ID Investigation addicts.

Enthralling!

As a follow-up to Queen City Gothic, Queen City Notorious satisfies equally well, in fact, better––since this time the murderers (if still alive when their crimes are uncovered) are identified, caught and brought to justice. J.T. Townsend’s meticulous research and painstaking detail give us front-row seats to crime scenes, perpetrators’ backgrounds, relentless police work in unraveling cases, and eventual punishments.

Vintage photos provide terrific take-you-there perspectives. In some cases, victims feel almost like family members; we come to know them that well. Seventeen-year-old college freshman Susan Aue, for example, shot while still half-asleep in her bed during Christmas break by ex-boyfriend Gordon Pape, is particularly tragic; she possessed the quadruple “threat” of brains, beauty, charm and a loving, privileged family. Such a sad loss of so much potential––and the sadder awareness that if her stalker had behaved so irrationally not in 1956, but 50 years later in 2006, cops would surely have been notified early on to monitor his comings and goings.

This book is a riveting read, chock full of behind-the-scenes trivia and police-blotter specifics. We can’t help being impressed by detectives who began with just a dead body and somehow constructed motive, deed and case worthy of trial. Author Townsend creates a linear path that not only in hindsight makes easy, logical sense––but also enthralls true-crime fans who relish and ride along with so many initial twists and turns.

I AM ADDICTED TO TOWNSEND

Having read QUEEN CITY GOTHIC, I had to read this second book of Townsend's. How could I live my entire life in a city so full of horrible awesomeness and not even realize it?! I had no clue what my own city had to offer and that is sad for me. But these books--I don't know how to put this, but I have trouble putting them down. I go by many of the murder/crime scenes every day!! Lots of great photos, well-written and has done a ton of research on the cases he puts into his books. I am hoping to get to go to one of his lectures sometime and that he has another book coming out soon!

This book has exceeded all the expectations i had for this small book. It is a collection of discourses given on the principles of karma and method of purifying and transcending our karma through yoga. Reading this is more than an interesting exposition of karma, it is an empowering revelation displaying the method of finding equanimity and balance while staying engaged in action.

A Ghost Story Full of Fun, Mystery and Romance

Talk about a book that keeps you guessing! Spirit of the Knight is definitely not a book for the dimwitted. There are more threads to this story than a Persian rug. Not only is there a castle with one ghost knight, there is a whole garrison and they evidently like to party like Prince in the nineties. Who knew there was a party circuit in the afterlife? There is obviously a bad guy, I mean it says so right in the blurb, but is there just one?? Ah ha! Could be, or maybe not. It also says Cailen is no ordinary ghost, I mean, these guys have ghost food and can SNOG!!

Mariah, now I really liked her. I'm usually not into characters who are artist because they just get a little to existential for me, but Mariah had her head on tight. She did not freak at ghost sightings, or speakings or even a ghost smooch or two. Nope she treated them just like you would any hunky dead guy in a hauberk. The biggest mystery for me though, was did they or didn't they? I mean I know they kissed, I read it. I know they slept in the same bed. Well, she did, ghost don't really sleep. But I never could figure out if they did or didn't. In case you're missing my point here, in sexual terms, this is a very sweet, use your imagination type book. Normally, not my thing..... at all. But there was so much already going on that I think the absence of sex may have been beneficial to the story. The tension and strong romance was plenty for Spirit of the Knight.

Despite being almost four hundred pages, this was a one sitting book for me. I was determined to figure out the mystery of why there was a castle full of dead knights and how they got there. This was a fun, smile and "awwwww" book, with lots of Scottish brogue, a wee bit of gore, and a very delightful couple. Thank you for the smiles Debbie, and job well done.

A Ghostly Romance with Mystery

Mariah Jennings is in for a surprise. An artist who has been commissioned to produce several works for a worldwide tour, she arrives at an old Scottish castle to capture its history and surroundings in oils. Although the locals warn the castle is haunted, she is undaunted about staying there alone. She’s already encountered several ghosts in her life, and what castle worth its salt wouldn’t have at least one?

It turns out her castle has many--including the phantom of a knight who has haunted her dreams since she was a child. Along with his men, Sir Calien Braithnoch, has been haunting his family estate for centuries, after being dispatched through treachery on the battlefield. The moment he spies Mariah, he feels a connection spring between them. It isn’t long before they find themselves falling deeply in love. But it isn’t simply their incompatible states of mortal and ghost that threaten their relationship.

There is something sinister buried deep in the history of the castle. Something that involves Cailen, his men, witchcraft, and several mysterious female ghosts that only Mariah can see. As the mystery grows, danger does too. There is a local villager who has set his sights on Mariah, and he’s willing to do just about anything to convince her they belong together.

Spirit of the Knight, is a tender romance rife with mystery and fascinating historical references. Once again, Debbie Peterson proves she is an enchantress when weaving these elements together. This is the third book in her “Spirit” series, each one focusing on a mortal woman and a ghostly hero from a different era in time. Highly recommended to those who enjoy a ghostly romance with mystery!

This book have everything in a really short-clean fashion, also illustrations helped me visualize the way stuff works well than any material I have read. A very helpful piece on getting started and excelling at Cisco networking. Very quick and simple explanations that are easy to understand but are careful to not leave out important details.
