Bauhaus Intro to Design

This book introduces the student to design using a theory of design developed by the Bauhaus school in the early 20th century, and conceiving of design as both a product and a process. The Bauhaus school sought to develop a theory of aesthetics appropriate for the modern age. The general approach is then used to apply to fashion design in particular, illustrating how Bauhaus principles can apply to fashion.

Organization is subdivided into the elements and principles of design. The eight elements (line, shape, form, space, light, color, texture, and pattern) are treated separately, some with their own chapter. Then the five principles by which the fashion designer organizes the elements (balance, emphasis, rhythm, proportion, and unity) are treated.

For each element or principle, major concepts, historical trends, and designers noted for that particular element or principle are highlighted. For example, in the section on color, readers are introduced to the color spectrum and different color wheels, light and dark colors, opposition theory, color as it relates to season and industry, types of dyes, etc.

Each of these topics could be explored much more in depth, but only the major ideas are highlighted. Finally, the book approaches all of its topics with three aspects of design in mind: aesthetic aspect (for instance how pattern draws the eye), structural aspect (for instance how the choice of materials support design elements), and functional aspect (for instance how it allows the wearer to move comfortably), with the focus being on aesthetic and structural aspects.

Some drawbacks of the book to me as a layperson- sometimes, new terms were introduced without being explained. For example she writes "there are many types of knitting such as x, y, z, and q" and then these terms are included in the vocabulary section at the end of each chapter. However, if I actually wanted to know what the difference was, I would have to look it up. To be fair it would be a substantially longer book if everything were fully explained.

The biggest drawback was that there did not seem to be any treatment of male fashion. I became interested in fashion through /r/malefashionadvice on reddit. I realized I did not understand any of the terms being discussed on there, so I chose this book. Unfortunately the focus was all on womens' dresses. I understand this may be the focus for fashion designers, however I am still looking for a similar book from a broader perspective. In a similar vein, almost all of the models were conventionally attractive young white women. And once again, from a fashion designer's perspective, perhaps this is all he or she cares about-- one of the designers highlighted, it was even mentioned she never designed dresses for herself because she considered herself too ugly. Others used muses. But from a layperson's perspective, people come in all shapes, sizes and colors and it seems to me that we imperfect ones are those that need fashion the most.

When I finished the book I went outside and tried to apply the principles taught in the book (such as emphasis and rhythm) to what I saw people wearing outside. What I noticed was that for many people, the emphasis in their outfits was not part of the garments themselves but some accessory -- for example, a handbag or a pair of glasses, or a hat. That made me realize this book did not really discuss a person's entire "look" but only the garment itself.

Overall I'm giving this four stars because I think basic concepts and principles are most important and the book covered this by far. But I am still looking for a similar book that goes into greater detail and covers a wider range of needs more from the consumer perspective. If anyone has any recommendations, please leave them in the comments. Thanks

gorgeous and informative

Fashion by Design provides historical context for design theory and evolution. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and clarify the discussion of design elements and principles. Anyone progressing through this book cannot help but develop a more artistic eye, honing his or her own design abilities. Projects outlined at the end of each chapter enable the student or individual reader to practice employing specific elements and principles. In addition, profiles of designers give insight into their artistic thinking and inspiration sources.

I can't imagine a more important book for the aspiring fashion designer.

About the Author
Michael J. Quinn is the author of the first four editions of Ethics for the Information Age. He is Dean of the College of Science and Engineering at Seattle University. He did his graduate work at University of Wisconsin - Madison and received his PhD at Washington State University. Previously, he was a professor of computer science at Oregon State University where he taught Social and Ethical Issues in Computer Science among other computer science courses.

Avoid the Kindle version if you want to read anywhere but your computer

The Kindle version of this book will only allow you to read it on "Kindle for PC." It won't let you read it on an actual Kindle or an Android device. I assume that is because it is a "print replica." Come on Pearson and Amazon! How many people sit down on their laptop or PC to read books? I feel totally ripped. Give me a book that is actually usable on my devices . . . that is why I buy digital ebooks!

Let's talk about the ethics of making minimal edits to sell a new edition! Another textbook racket!

Bought 5th edition in July. In August the school changed requirement to 6th edition. Haven't read either edition yet, but it appears that page numbering tbtrfg has changed by only about 5 pages.

Actually, it's not "OK" (the 3-star designation); would prefer not to leave a star rating yet, but Amazon requires it.

Actually Impressed

As a Computer Science student, I was actually impressed by this book. Admittedly, my expectations were low, but Dr. Quinn did a relatively good job of covering both the ethical and technical aspects of a variety of relevant topics.

The discussions of various ethical theories did a good job of relating the theories to relevant technical topics, but wasn't as skeptical as I would have liked. Arguments in favor of and against each theory are listed, but some obviously nonsensical points are given a free pass. A critical reader should have no trouble discerning these however, so they don't really detract from the book in my mind.

Most of the rest of the book is dedicated to a discussion of various ethical dilemas related to technology, and this portion of the book was really excellent. Dr. Quinn did a great job of selecting relevant historical situations and presenting them in a way that is both comprehensible and correct - a rare thing in texts of this sort.

Really the main thing that I felt detracted from this book was the illustrations. As others have noted, they are excessive and almost exclusively worthless. Grade 1-4-- Minna, a young Appalachian girl, wants very badly to attend school, but she doesn't have a coat. Her father has just died and her family cannot afford one. When a group of mothers who gather at her house regularly to make quilts hear of her predicament, they decide to help her. Minna is thrilled, but when the new coat is finished and she wears it to the one-room schoolhouse, she is teased by her classmates for wearing rags. Minna is hurt, but she eventually gains their interest when she explains that her coat is full of stories--their stories--for each scrap has come from one of their homes. The children are enthralled and sorry for their taunts. Mills's care and attention to details make her book as charming as her narrative. The paper is a cream color, and the watercolor palette is warm but faded to give an antique cast to the illustrations. The large, lovely paintings that bring the characters and period to life are balanced by text on the bottom half of the left-hand pages; the generous blank space is filled with small scraps of colorful cloth. The writing is lyrical; its heartwarming message emphasizes the value of a community and sharing. Minna's family can't afford a coat for her, but Papa keeps her warm in winter with a burlap sack and Mama's patchwork quilt; this happy family understands that ``People only need people, and nothing else.'' Soon, Minna loses one of those people: Papa, a coal miner, gets the lung sickness and dies, after urging eight- year-old Minna to start school. There's still the problem of the coat, solved by neighbors who contribute scraps and help to make one of patchwork lined with the old sack, ready almost as soon as cold weather begins. At first, the other children tease Minna about her outlandish garment; then, learning that the patchwork contains bits of their own histories, they begin to honor Minna and the stories she tells about the coat's many pieces. This sweet, sober tale about love and good will overcoming poverty is reminiscent of Marguerite de Angeli's thoughtful books--especially in the soft, delicately detailed illustrations with their subtly poignant charcterizations and lovingly evoked setting in time past. About the Author
Lauren Mills has won acclaim both as an author/illustrator and as a sculptor. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the country and her books have won awards including the Golden Kite Best Book Award and the Charlotte Award. One of the most touching and beautiful stories I have ever read! A little girl loses the father she so deeply loves, but never forgets the important lessons he taught her or the love he had for her. Her dream is to go to school, but her family can't buy her a coat. Finally, kind friends of her mama help make her a coat out of quilt pieces. Her excitement at wearing her new coat to school and sharing it with her new friends quickly changes to sadness when she is taunted by her playmates. But she remembers her father's lessons and his love and helps her friends come to see how special her coat is--to ALL of them! This story is part of the reading series I teach from and when I read it for the first time last year, my class was staring at me in amazement as I sobbed my way through the end! I had to get a copy for myself and my little girl!

deeply moving story of dealing with sorrow and teasing

I must confess, I was not prepared to read my 5 year old a book on death...and I was a little shocked to find out during my first time reading it to her (I guess I should have pre-read it). Even so, I loved it, and so did she! This story deals with the sorrow of death and the humiliation of poverty in a real and positive way, without being sentimental. It is beautiful to see a child come up with a loving solution to her problems.

About the Author
Alan Simon is a Senior Lecturer in the Information Systems Department at Arizona State University's WP Carey School of Business. He is also the Managing Principal of Thinking Helmet, Inc., a boutique consultancy specializing in enterprise business intelligence and data management architecture. Alan has authored or co-authored 29 technology and business books dating back to 1985. He has previously led national or global BI and data warehousing practices at several consultancies, and has provided enterprise data management architecture and roadmap services to more than 40 clients dating back to the early 1990s.

From 1987-1992 Alan was a software developer and product manager with Digital Equipment Corporation's Database Systems Group, and earlier he was a United States Air Force Computer Systems Officer stationed at Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado.

Alan received his Bachelor's Degree from Arizona State University and his Master's Degree from the University of Arizona, and is a native of Pittsburgh.
