Thorough Tutorials on Unit and End-to-End Testing

An excellent end-to-end walk-through of an Angular workflow where testing is as natural and unobtrusive as possible. Unit testing with Jasmine/Karma and end-to-end testing with Protractor are thoroughly covered (although the author by no means exhausts the Jasmine and Protractor APIs), and he makes a very strong case for true test-driven development.

Though I've been personally working with Jasmine/Karma for awhile, I've never learned to use Protractor and I'm glad this book covered it. The online documentation and available tutorials on Protractor is a bit spotty and it's been hard to try and self-teach, so that lead me to search for some good books. Amos Haviv's "MEAN Web Development" doesn't cover much of Protractor, and really neither have Adam Freeman or any of Brad Dayley's Angular books, but the need for end-to-end testings is certainly there.

Reading this book I realized how I was pushing my unit tests to do what could be more easily done in Protractor, and as a result of the effort involved in writing those kinds of jQuery-heavy DOM inspecting tests, I was thereafter reluctant to keep my unit tests in sync whenever I made coding changes. The better solution would have been (in hindsight) to learn how to use Protractor, scale back on the jQuery usage in my unit tests, and limit the scope of my true unit tests to where they more naturally fall in place.

I am not sure I'll be able to personally adopt a full test-driven development workflow, but we'll see over time if the impression left on my by this book will set in. Test-driven development is a hard mindset to adopt as it takes away from the ingrained workflow that most of us have had for our entire careers, but if it can be done in any particular language it would probably be least obtrusive in a dynamic language like JavaScript or Python.

One word of caution with this author's style is he tends to introduce features in code before fully defining them, but stick with it because he'll do so later. It might frustrate you at first as you leaf back through the book to see if you missed something earlier, but he will explain in-depth later (sometimes in a later chapter even). In retrospect I think I prefer this to the more standard pattern of a dictionary's worth of definitions and explanations before you get to see it in action. And to his credit, the author understands the value of repetition in driving home new concepts as you'll be exposed to new concepts several times and sometimes with a few different looks at it before moving on to the next concept. So this is definitely the type of book where you can learn new concepts instead of just wetting your appetite enough to be confused and then end up searching the web for the API docs.

I would not recommend this book for introductory AngularJS developers

AngularJS testing is an oft-neglected topic, so it was quite refreshing to dive into a subtopic of the framework. Protractor can be a bit of a drag to get configured properly, and this book offers plenty of coverage for getting off the ground with it. I would not recommend this book for introductory AngularJS developers, as it requires at least a basic level of understanding of the main framework components to really understand how and why various testing methodologies are appropriate. Overall, a fine supplementary text for individuals concerned with getting AngularJS testing right the first time.

Great read for people new or experienced to TDD

I bought this book with, and read it after, Learning AngularJS: A Guide to AngularJS Development by Ken Williamson. While the other book did cover tdd, this book added more depth to the topic, as well as gave a great overview of some of the tools to use. I had done unit testing in the past with phpUnit, so this was easy to pickup and follow. It seems to also provide enough background about TDD for people with little to no experience with TDD, assuming you are comfortable with Angular.

A very powerful book

This is a very powerful book. I've never even heard of affirmations before, but really wanted to manifest money, and so after getting this book and trying the techniques I suddenly received an email out of nowhere of someone wanting to pay $1,000 for a domain name I had bought for about $10 not too long ago an never used, and no one ever purchased a domain name off of me in my life before. Now this could be just coincidence, but it really did happen, and I wonder if I actually manifested this. Thus, I am currently following the suggestions in this neat little book in order to see what else happens.

Give it a try

I thought I would give this a try. What did I have to loose? I was at the bottom of nothing. I didn't take it seriously, but I mustered up the faith and confidence to believe it could work. After all, I used to teach meditation and creative visualization and knew that it can and does work. Since I do have experience, I didn't limit myself. I opened with the least amount I needed. Well, low and behold within a day or so, not only did I receive the few hundred dollars I needed immediately, a few days later, I was gifted out of nowhere the few thousand dollars I needed to clear up all of my credit card debts!!! On top of that, I was in the black with almost two thousand dollars for future bills, to buy birthday and other gifts for my children and grand children and money left over for a rainy day. Most important of all, for the first time in many years I was able to Tithe!!! The Lord loves a cheerful giver and you can never out give God. This works, but in my opinion, it was more of "answered prayer" that really sealed the deal along with my "faith" in God's promises.

Affirmations and visualization have been hot topics in the self help industry for the past couple years.
The new age movement has really taken off with the video ‘the secret’.
But the truth is that these teachings have been with us forever.
Even Jesus and Buddha taught these teachings thousands of years ago.
However now, people focus their metaphysical efforts on making money and business success.
Which is NOT a bad thing.
In my experience, if we keep repeating information that doesn’t sound true, in other words, chronic affirmations that goes against what we really believe… the affirmation will not manifest.
Beliefs are what creates reality.
And beliefs have to be in complete alignment with the affirmations. Interesting read over all.

About the Author
Gaylord Enns has served in full-time Christian ministry for over forty years. He started ministry to college students in the 60's and was a leader in the Jesus Movement in the 70's. His pastoral ministry served one congregation for thirty-three years. In 2003, he founded Servant Leadership Network (SLN) to facilitate ministry to pastors and next-generation leaders. His focus is on building relationship between pastors within cities based on the core commandments of Christian discipleship. Over the thirty-nine years that he and his wife, Patti, have been married, they have worked together closely in ministry. They enjoy a loving relationship with their children and grandchildren.

required reading

Just recently I was visiting with our son's family in Chico, CA. The day before I was to return to Ohio, our 'daughter' put this book in my hand. Next day on the long flight home I read nearly half this book, could not put it down. It touched my heart so to think that I've believed and served our Lord Jesus all these years and thought I understood the New Testament's 2 new commandments. Yet the way Gaylord explains this simple truth of first believing in Jesus and then receving His commandment to love one another is such freedom. Such simplicity! The author explains this basic truth very well and can be clearly understood by anyone! This should be required reading for any born again Christian!

Great Book

After reading this book, I bought two more to give away (didn't want to give away my copy). The author (a pastor) distills the gospel down to two commandments that Jesus gave: (1) to believe in Him and (2) to love one another. The author made this discovery years into his ministry during a low period. He discovered that the teaching to "love one another" became virtually lost within a few centuries of the birth of Christianity. The "Love Revolution" is the rediscovery of this great commandment. It is well worth the read. I believe that it captures the true heart of the gospel with out the filters of "religion".

A Must Read

This is just one of those books! I've read it. Reread it. Given away copies to my pastor, worship leader, family and friends. I've mentioned it when I speak, referenced it in my writings, and referred to it in casual conversations. This book's message resonates with me. Gaylord Enns has started a movement toward the center. The message of this book cuts through the layers of separation found in religion and meets on one uniting truth. The words are for the Church found in Christ's words to all who put their faith in Christ. We are to love one another. Profound. "A new command I give to you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:34,35) When love comes first, walls come down. The strength and validity of Christ's command comes to Pastor Enns late in his pastoral ministry. He is in the prime of his ministry, a well-known and respected minister in the Chico, CA area, a loving mentor of Christian people. A personal crisis stops him in his tracks. The year is 2001, it is early on Sunday morning before a day of scheduled preaching. But it soon becomes the day he can't preach, is unable to preach. Depression hit hard. Then cancer. Time away from ministry. Soul searching. A personal longing begins to gnaw at him. He wants to hear his father say the words, "I love you." Enns' interesting and amazing journey leads us to the words, "This is my command: Love each other." He is startled as he contemplates these words. Why is this command is so little emphasized, ignored, almost brushed aside? A quest is undertaken. He searches for the command's historical church context from deep in the archives. Little is found. He knows he is on to something. He writes "Love Revolution" and begins to share with local church leaders. The book's message of love multiplies. Sessions are held in local churches to bring Christian people together. They are uniting in love. It is a beautiful movement of God. I know this because I attended some of these sessions to fellowship with my sisters and brothers in the faith. . . In 2008, a friend gave me this book. Its words are timely for there is much truth written in its pages. I highly recommend this book.

Good entry book.

This book contains a fair amount of general introduction of many sections of Astronomy from which I mostly like the constallation description part.It helps you to get a general idea
of stellar objects. During day time I read around what I'm going to observe at night, so it is very helpful me to get a basic idea of that particular object. It is one of my references in binocular astronomy other than a decent star atlas.It is fun to know a short description of the observing target while you are behind the eyepiece. So I highly recommend this book for novice members.
