About the Author
Gary Holz, D.Sc. (1950-2007), was an award-winning physicist and a psycho-neuro-immunologist. In 1994, confined to a wheelchair with multiple sclerosis, he went to Australia to stay with an Aboriginal tribe and experienced miraculous healing. Robbie Holz is a holistic health consultant dedicated to continuing the healing work of her late husband. She healed herself of hepatitis C and has also worked with Aboriginal healers in Australia. She lives near Seattle.

PROLOGUE
A SINGLE STEP

According to my doctors, I was not supposed to be alive today. But I am. My healing was not accomplished through modern medicine, with wonder drugs and technologies. No. For me the healing began on the other side of the world in the Australian Outback, with ways that are as ancient as the human race itself.

My journey began with a single step--a step I took on my way to yet another business meeting. My left foot didn’t lift properly, it was dragging a little as I walked. But my life had enough problems. I told myself I must have strained a muscle. The next day my foot was normal and I forgot about it.

But the “dragging” returned. The scuff marks across the top of my shoe proved I wasn’t imagining the weakness in my left foot or the tingling numbness. It was real. Too real. I decided I had pinched a nerve in my foot that would disappear in time.

For several months I experienced periods of numbness and tingling followed by periods of normalcy. But I was troubled when the area of numbness increased. It worked its way from the left foot to the left calf. Then it started in the right foot and worked its way to the right calf.

My high-tech aerospace company was growing rapidly and demanding most of my time and attention. I had no time for symptoms, for pinched nerves, for any distraction. So I bought a cane at a local drug store. I would have continued living this way indefinitely if I hadn’t awoke one morning and discovered that the numb feeling now had spread to my groin area. It was taking over my sense of maleness. Using a cane was one thing, but this was something altogether different. That day I called to arrange for tests at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California.

What happened next knocked the wind out of me.

“At this point the most educated guess says you are suffering from chronic progressive MS--multiple sclerosis.” I was speechless. All I could do was cling to the words “educated guess.” Maybe the doctor was wrong. He had admitted that multiple sclerosis was difficult to diagnose. I could be suffering from stress. My first marriage had ended in divorce, my second marriage was rapidly heading for the same, my children were cold and distant, and there was the pressure of running my business. That was it, I was certain. I just needed some rest.

As my mind continued to marshal its arguments, the doctor continued. “We can give you medication that will ease the pain. Unfortunately, there is no known cause for multiple sclerosis, and therefore we have no cure.”

No cure.

Those two words stopped the chatter of my mind and began to repeat like a broken record. No cure. No cure. The doctor droned on in a voice so flat he could have been lecturing to a classroom of bored medical students.

There would be periods when I would experience an increase in pain and symptoms--an “exacerbation.” The symptoms would decline in intensity with time, but there would sometimes be a permanent result such as numbness.

Then in a slightly softer voice--as if he finally remembered he was talking to the patient, the one for whom there was “no cure”--he added, “I know it’s no comfort but the reality is, we simply don’t know how this will affect your life. The course of the disease varies from person to person. It’s impossible to know what course yours will take or how severe it will become.”

I seemed to be outside myself, watching the entire scene from someplace else--someplace safe. Where was my reaction to this news? I should have been horrified. But somehow, no emotions came. I felt no fear, no anger, no self‑pity, no sorrow. I felt nothing. Just emptiness.

The next seven years of my life were a nightmare.

For four years I continued dragging myself around airports and boardrooms, forcing myself to “walk” on two canes because I was afraid that once I got into a wheelchair I’d never get out again. Finally, in 1988, I gave in. I got a chair. That was also the year that I began taking a liter of Prednisone a day through an IV. I thought things couldn’t get much worse.

But they did. In 1994 my doctor told me I was losing the battle. My internal organs were shutting down. I should begin to get my affairs in order. I had two years to live--at most.

Two years. I was forty-three years old. By then I was spending most of my time in a wheelchair, had almost no feeling in my body, was catheterized, and could barely lift my arms to feed myself. Even so, I knew I was not ready to die. There was still so much that I wanted to experience. My desperation was deep and black, and I felt totally alone.

And then a series of what I would have called strange coincidences occurred.

Seeking relief from the unrelenting depression, I stopped in at a local jazz club. I happened to encounter a naturopath from Australia who happened to know some extraordinary healers in an Aboriginal tribe in the Australian Outback. She happened to have the phone number of one, Ray Gelar, which she gave to me.

That was all strange enough, but even stranger was the strong urge I had to call him. It was completely out of character for me, but I did it. I called Ray. I asked him if he could help me.

A week later this man--who had devoted his life to physics, to logic, to hard cold facts--rolled his wheelchair onto a plane bound for Australia. Part of me thought I was insane. But another part of me was saying this was my only chance. What did I have to lose?

Just What I Needed...

"Secrets of Aboriginal Healing" seems to have come at a point in my life just when I needed something encouraging and uplifting. The story of Gary Holz, who went from a progressing MS patient with a limited time left to a healed condition is remarkable.
Holz's experience with the Australian Aborigines, who live so simply and yet find fulfillment that we in the "civilized" world rarely do, is inspiring, and reminds us that material goods and acquititions are just distractions from who we really are inside.
The techniques and processes that the Aboriginals used to reprogram Gary's mindset, both about himself and the world around him, are easily implemented, and rely on common sense and holistic healing processes, where the entire being - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, are all taken into account. Having used some of the techniques myself, I can attest to the fact that they WORK.
The book is only 114 pages, but it's written concisely and to-the-point, partly from being transcribed from actual recordings from the sessions in the Outback. The information was very useful to me, and I hope that you might glean the same success from it.

This book was inspiring, to say the least. I read this hoping to gain some insight into how I might cure my rheumatoid arthritis, and I was not disappointed. I found the message within the book to be largely related to the emotional component of autoimmune diseases, and this is something I've been focusing on in attempting to cure my own RA. I've noticed that I always feel better when I deal with my emotional "stuff."

I appreciate that the author had not fully cured his MS, but rather found solace in small improvements to the disease. I learned a lot from this book. It was simple to read and authentic in its message.

I highly recommend for anyone seeking answers to why they struggle with disease. I believe in the power of the mind, and this book absolutely verified that the mind is at the core of disease. I love learning about the Australian Aboriginals, and I only wished I could have gotten even a deeper insight into their culture -- but that wasn't the experience of the author. I can totally appreciate that. Loved the book.

More very clear evidence that our beliefs cause our dis-eases in life!

More and more we are learning how our beliefs and our emotions are a root cause of our experiencing of diseases in life. Gary Holz presents a wonderful story of his own experiences in overcoming his debilitating and rapidly declining health with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). As a successful scientist with absolute beliefs that there is no such thing as Spirits or alternative healing methods, he is faced with only a few months to live, when he finds himself following his "intuition" and travels to Australia to live in an Aboriginal village and be healed by the village healers. During his stay, his whole belief system is "re-programmed" to the understanding that we are all connected and actually are the "creators" of our own lives, and dis-eases. He learns that by changing our beliefs, we can bring about greater health, happiness, and real wealth in our lives. Gary recovered from his MS and went on to becoming a very successful healer in his own right. We have so much we can learn from the Aboriginal cultures of the world, and the future of medicine and healing is to be found in these ancient practices.

Very good teaching and shorter reference text

This commentary on the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights references leading decisions and dicta of the United Nations Human Rights Committee, along with some material from other supranational bodies, together with comment by the three authors, all of whom are prominent human rights academics.

The coverage is comprehensive and the material readily accessible as a student text and also provides a short reference and/or starting point for more developed professional or scholarly work. It can, at that point, be usefully supplemented by the Nowak commentary, which is more detailed but perhaps less accessible, not to mention more expensive, and by the various indexing and digesting services, such as that provided by the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights.

Challenging but amazing book

Again Robert Thurman is a master of expertise. THIS book will be a challenge but the more I read much easier books and then come back to this more academic version the more I grasp. It is more a scholarly text book but a thrilling addition to the "real" thing. Also It's biggest gift to me was the concept of using my intelligence and brain and mind. Up to now it was all woo-woo and still the mind. This book opens the doors to wisdom which is the other part of the equation. Compassion AND wisdom. After wading thru a few pages of copious foot notes and lecture, my brain was sparking and activated. I am blessed to have discovered it.

A very detailed exposition.

I have 4 Thurman books on Tsong Kha Pa. He is very precise. I do think he could make the translation of this a bit easier, like the 'Life and Teachings' he edited . I strongly advise to get that first if you are fairly new to this subject. All of Thurman's books are over priced, even more so due to the poor quality of the various Indian publishers' used. Get used copies if you can.
The introduction Pre states all he ends up translating in the actual text, yet it is very worthwhile if you, like me, are not a Specialist. Tsong Khapa can get into the most detailed minutia of any subject. 'Blue is blue, but not really blue... so much blue your mind will go numb. Tsongkhapa felt obligated to go into the most minute of details to clear up the True Middle Way teaching for all those who attempted to refute it. It deals a little with Dol Pa's views, which are rather straight forward..to me.
When this text goes into the 'finest' of arguments and refutaions of Yogacharya and many other Schools;.. without being familiar with all 'the Opponent's' views and terminology... there can be quite a bit of difficulty, at least to me. This can become seemingly contradictory, if not non sensical to the Western Reader or Sophist Debator. Obviously some arguments will be non convincing due to modern knowlege and science. Not in any way an introductory text. He also shows the non contradictions in various other schools.
Very few books can combine the academic and the esoteric... Mr. Thurman does that with ease, even though it may not be easy reading. The true Teaching, of the Highest Order imho.
Do prepare though with the Life & Teachings. This is not a Lam Rim or Vinaya teaching...straight Reason, and Sutra based. Small font as always on his books.

Relieves Suffering

The context of the book is the thesis that belief in inherent existence (meaning, roughly, "externally self-standing, permanent, absolute, not-depending-on-anything-else" existence as opposed to "relative" or "dependent on other things" existence) is the source of suffering, because it creates bases for clinging to negative emotions. People hold this belief in many forms, applied to many things, at many levels. Detailed analysis of each instance and/or category of this belief can undermine and weaken that particular belief, and finally shatter it. This relieves the suffering associated with that instance or category of the belief, because negative emotions can no longer "stick" to the objects of the (dissolved) belief. Tsong-Ka-Pah's "Essence of Eloquence" is aimed at analyzing and shattering a form of the belief in inherent existence that operates at a deep psychological level, and yet which can still be accessed through conscious examination and logic. Tsong-Ka-Pah's claim is that this is the deepest such level of belief and corresponding analysis. Thurman's introduction compares Tsong-Ka-Pa's treatise, from the 1300's, with a similar finding by Wittgenstein in the 1900's. Seeing the thesis from these two different perspectives is helpful in "triangulating" the intended object of understanding. The material is challenging to follow as it requires developing and maintaining an experiential knowledge of subtle (yet perceivable) mental phenomena (such as "knowing") and complex relationships among these phenomena. By way of further triangulation, the material appears to address the difference between the "autonomist" schools and the "consequentialist" schools of Tibetan Buddhism that are outined in Guy Newland's "Appearance and Reality". The key area of belief that Tsong-Ka-Pa, Wittgenstein and Thurman address has to with "private languages" and the syllogisms that are based on them. The key message is that these conceptual tools inevitably reinforce the belief in inherent, as opposed to relative, existence. Because of this, private languages and the syllogisms that are based on them provide bases for attachments for negative emotions and thus sources of suffering. Accordingly, these conceptual tools eventually have to be abandoned, in terms of believing that they represent or are based on things that inherently exist, if a person is to achieve liberation from suffering, enlightenment, etc. "The Essence of Eloquence" appears to be aimed as showing exactly why private languages and the syllogisms have this flaw of reinforcing the general belief that things have inherent existence, as opposed to relative existence.
