This book has lots of info but it will require that the instructor explains and goes over things for better understanding especially for students/ppl that never dealt with electric motors.

A light yet thoughtful read

When a good deed done by James leads to Flora, James, and their two teenage daughters being invited to a fabulous villa in the south of France belonging to a famous opera singer, they jump at the chance to leave it all behind for a while. They exchange their everyday worries about the mortgage and their jobs and their future for a chance to leave it all behind and just relax. What they are not expecting is that their baggage from home can follow them anywhere.

James develops a school boy's crush on their famous host, Flora's past comes back to haunt her, and their relatives and their troubles join them in France, and suddenly their blissful holiday takes a not- so- blissful turn. Will their dream vacation turn into a nightmare?

Wish You Were Here was, at times, a blissful and fun retreat into the south of France with the Murray-Browns and their wacky friends and family members. I liked Flora and James and their daughters most times, but the supporting characters were the ones that really stood out to me, especially Flora's hippie mother who loves her family so much! I also really loved James's father, even though he didn't often take a starring role in the book. I didn't like Flora and James's daughter Amelia, who was selfish and spoiled, but I suppose that it is a reflection on how many of the kids of today act.

I'm a big fan of Catherine Alliott, but this wasn't my favourite book of hers so far. It started off pretty slow for me, and truthfully I didn't care much for Flora, James, or their children. Thankfully it picked up for me when I was about halfway through the story, and I started really enjoying the plot, and I definitely appreciated the ending.

Wish You Were Here was the story of one family's life-changing vacation in the south of France. It was a thought-provoking story about marriage and fidelity and parenthood and finding happiness in whatever stage of life you are in, and I enjoyed this light, engaging read. My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a copy for review.

A fun read with meaningful themes

I enjoyed this book. I read it quickly because it was fun yet still touched on serious themes. I really liked the characters and they were portrayed very well. I felt as though I was there with them in Provence :-)

I have grown with Catherine Alliott, we are similar age and I have had the same life changes as all the characters featured in her books, I really relate. Wish you were here was up to her usual brilliant standards, hilarious, meaningful, couldn't put it down.

I don't like writers that don't do their research!

After the first few pages I quit trying to read this book. The writer did NOT even do basic research for this book, there was no such word as luggage in that time period. I did not wait to find anymore mistakes like that. Yes, I am a history buff and it drives me craze when a writer does not take the time to research the time period they are trying to writing about. If anyone wants to read a good historical book, try Elizabeth Chadwick or Roberta Gellis.

I love this story!

I loved it! This is the first Scottish romance I've read and it has me hooked. The writing is top-notch with just the right amount of suspense. I love the main characters and can't wait to read the next book in the series - ROMANCE: The Highlander's Destiny: A Contemporary Scottish Romance (The Laird's Legacy Book 2).

Underwhelming, Unbelievable, and Perhaps Unfinished

Reader beware, light spoilers to follow.

This book was not a trailblazer in the plot department. A young English woman being tossed into an arranged marriage, only to be kidnapped by barbaric Scots...it's a fairly well-known trope. That in itself wouldn't have bothered me, it if had been well done. I don't terribly mind reading familiar plots. When I pick up romantic fiction, what I'm really looking for well-developed characters, believable relationships, and passion. This book failed on all counts.

We'll start with character development. Apparently, this author believes that ONE characteristic is enough of a foundation for the entire person to stand on. Lachlan has a tiny half-smile smirk. Gail has a big, boisterous laugh. That about sums up their characters. They weren't fleshed out enough. The story wasn't long enough, nor did it span enough time to fully realize the characters. Even the protagonist, Elena, seemed utterly generic. I never really got invested in her as a person. Honestly, I think the author was going for a cheap emotional connection by having Elena violently kidnapped and almost raped, hoping that those events alone would be enough to bond the reader to her. And speaking of her attacks...

I don't mind suspending reality for the sake of a story, if we're talking about fantasy elements (dragons, magic, etc.) However, I can't connect to a story that wants me to believe that a woman would fall in love with a man (AFTER ONE DAY) who led the attack that killed all her escorts and kidnapped her. It's just utterly unbelievable to me. Maybe if she had been there a long time and come to truly know these people (not just Lachlan) I could see it. It also bothered me (even struck me as a little...racist?) that all the Scots except for the hunky man were portrayed as barbarians, dirty and stupid and cruel. It didn't sit well with me. Something else completely unbelievable...no one would give a prisoner a weapon and then teach them how to use it! A day after kidnapping her! It's ridiculous. Lachlan had NO reason to believe that she wouldn't stab him at the earliest opportunity.

Finally, I felt this story lacked passion. This probably goes back to the fact that the story literally covers the span of 3 days. I just can't get on board with this romance unfolding so quickly. The two characters needed more time together. It would have been nice to have some chapters from Lachlan's perspective, to see how his feelings for Elena were developing. As far as Elena's passion for Lachlan, I'm sorry, but repeated descriptions of shudders and belly-warmth is not enough for me. There was some hint of passion during their fighting lesson, but it wasn't enough.

This was a quick read, but it still felt like a waste of my time. This feels like a very early rough draft that needs a ton of revision and addition to make it a palatable, enjoyable read.

Intuitive presentation of cookbook methods

I've used the first (1985) edition of this book. I borrowed it from the library and was able to go through it quickly and start sketching, for example, correct one-point and two-point perspective grids, renderings from plans, etc. I'd recommend borrowing the book for such a quick introduction, but not buying it if you're looking for a single perspective title for your library.

The limitation of the book is that it does not engage in any careful explanation (the diagrams are left to do the talking: they cleverly convey more than appears at first sight, but there are many things they simply cannot address). No one could learn from this book to UNDERSTAND how and why the practical tricks it presents work. For example, a method is described for determining and using a "measuring point," but you will not learn what this point actually represents, why it is located as it is, or by what magical process it can be used to make correct drawings. Maybe some would never miss such insights, but I feel that an artist should not use any tool or material without some basic understanding of how it works: if I'm simply ticking off the steps of a procedure 1-2-3, I am doing something very like clicking my point-and-shoot camera without an understanding of shutter speed, aperture, etc.

The relentlessly visual-cookbook nature of the book may also make it suitable for use after learning the principles of perspective: the more elaborate illustrations may serve as good applied examples or even inspiration for imaginative or imitative constructions.

purchased this for class.. really useful, still use it for reference even after the class.. easy to follow and great examples in the book.. would recommend this for anyone needing help on perspective drawing.

a good book!

This book is all about perspective, it's a great book for art students.
it's straight forward, a lot of examples shown in here, since we are all visual arts students, it's just perfect.
I would recommend this book
I'm not so passionate about this book yet, because I haven't finish reading it, and I didn't have much time to read it carefully for the past few weeks.
I will say it's a great book, it has a lot of tips that get me thinking while I draw.
I got this book new, packaging and delivery were great!
