Worth it!

I have always wanted to know what goes on when I see the officers speeding past me at such a high speed and wonder what excitement or intense situation there heading off to. I first hand love when I get to witness funny situations with the officers when it comes to certain people I deal with everyday, especially when you get the pleasure of working with the funniest, and most sarcastic officer's. But when it comes to this book it is absolutely hilarious. Took me a minute to finally finish due to my schedule but when you get into each story you definitely cant help but laugh and wonder how hard it was for each officer to hold the laughter from these situations. My favorite stories are the courtesy flush and I'm watching pooorrnn! Those were hilarious along with each and every story but the dirty and gross stories are definitely my favorite. It was a pleasure reading each and every story, so with that being said this book is definitely worth every penny spent.

Think: Chicken Soup for the Soul meets Reno 911/Brooklyn 99! This collection of humorous short stories will have you laughing until it hurts whether you are part of law enforcement or not. It's a great way to show that police officers are just people like the rest of us. I loved how you don't need to have a lot of time to read to enjoy this book. It is set up where you only need a couple minutes at a time to pick it up and read a snippet or two to get a great laugh. I truly started to wonder if someone would call the police for a well-being check on a crazy woman laughing hysterically alone in her car.....but then I might be in the next book!!

John is a great raconteur who has led a remarkable life. His career as a documentary film maker was nearly ended near its peak by his second near fatal bicycle accident. "Nearly" because he is a valiant man who found a way to continue working. I give it 4 stars rather than 5 because I reserve 5 stars for hearing him tell it rather than reading it.

Edwards's assured but schematic debut novel (after her collection, The Secrets of a Fire King) hinges on the birth of fraternal twins, a healthy boy and a girl with Down syndrome, resulting in the father's disavowal of his newborn daughter. A snowstorm immobilizes Lexington, Ky., in 1964, and when young Norah Henry goes into labor, her husband, orthopedic surgeon Dr. David Henry, must deliver their babies himself, aided only by a nurse. Seeing his daughter's handicap, he instructs the nurse, Caroline Gill, to take her to a home and later tells Norah, who was drugged during labor, that their son Paul's twin died at birth. Instead of institutionalizing Phoebe, Caroline absconds with her to Pittsburgh. David's deception becomes the defining moment of the main characters' lives, and Phoebe's absence corrodes her birth family's core over the course of the next 25 years. David's undetected lie warps his marriage; he grapples with guilt; Norah mourns her lost child; and Paul not only deals with his parents' icy relationship but with his own yearnings for his sister as well. Though the impact of Phoebe's loss makes sense, Edwards's redundant handling of the trope robs it of credibility. This neatly structured story is a little too moist with compassion.

Save Your Money

I think it must just be me but I didn't like this book at all. Mostly, I didn't like either of the main characters. The husband gives away his Down syndrom newborn daughter without blinking an eye then tells his wife she died. The mother, even though she has the remaining twin who is strong and healthy cannot concentrate on the baby she does have but gets more and more depressed over the one she doesn't have. Both parents disgusted me almost to no end. The one bright spot was the Down syndrom child, raised by the husband's nurse (he is a doctor). I liked the nurse, her husband, and the little girl. Otherwise, I thought this book was long and boring. I was expecting so much more. I won't be recommending this book to my friends. The writing was first class. The story itself nearly bored me to death.

Good writing. Interesting premise. However, the ending struck me as contrived for a made for Hollywood movie. A writer to watch with a talent for some lovely prose and interesting characters.

A good study on the individual characters' life turmoils caused by a single act. I could identify a little with all of them, but that's just me. I guess the reaction to any story is based upon the reader's individual journey in life.

Raised with a strong Jewish identity in New England, Harmon visited Israel as a teenager in 1984. He immediately knew he wanted to live there. Over the next thirteen years, Harmon was in the ranks of a military that was adapting to ever-changing threats. In 1990 killing was always used as a last resort, but by 2002 targeted assassinations were employed to decapitate terrorist gangs. Harmon s own wish for a separate Palestinian state never wavered, but his dismay at the increasing violence by Palestinians, desperate to achieve independence, mirrors the growing belief in Israel that a true rapprochement is not on the horizon.

Lonely Soldier, completed as Israel was beginning to disengage from Gaza, is a unique and thrilling glimpse into a revered yet misunderstood institution that is integral to Middle East peace.

This is an even-paced, detailed, deliberate account of a sincere New Englander's move to Israel in 1990, where he enlists as a paratrooper just before the beginning of the Gulf War. Despite his weak grasp of Hebrew, Harmon graduates from basic training and soon finds himself guarding the country's borders and volunteering for raids against known and suspected terrorists. Throughout his service in the West Bank and Lebanon, he maintains a measured tone sympathetic to the hardships of neighboring Palestinians, even as he's called back from civilian life following an upswing in violence. For such a strictly chronological account-not merely day-to-day but at times moment-to-moment-Harmon's work is surprisingly captivating. Though he isn't always able to distinguish between pertinent and expendable information, Harmon's voice is so consistent and genuine that it's impossible not to identify with his steadfast journey. An illuminating account of a much-covered conflict, this is a memoir for anyone who wants a look behind the daily headlines.

This well-told tale of an American Jew in the Israeli army adds notably to our knowledge of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) during the 1990s. Harmon traveled to Israel during his college years and decided on a permanent move after graduation. He was fit enough to be accepted for the elite parachute and recon units, donning an IDF uniform for the first Gulf War and the second intifada. Thereby he adopted the perspective of being early on the scene when terrorism struck the local shopping mall, riots arose outside a favorite nightclub, and a pitched battle was only a commute away. He provides many vivid portraits of fellow soldiers in the world's most reticent army but not much on weapons and tactics, for which the IDF is no doubt grateful. His attitude is that of an observant Jew and a strong Zionist, and with passion and clarity he enlightens us about a crucially significant fighting force not covered with this kind of intimacy by the general media. This book transcends place and nationality to reveal the essence of soldierly virtues tough, decent, honest, and accepting of continuous hardships and solitary duties at low pay. As a soldier, Harmon would wince at such praise. But it s true. This is the story of what makes a real soldier.

I dont think its as good as "Crybaby Brigade" or "Pumpkin Flowers" -- but its the author's thoughts about his time as a lone soldier in the Israeli Army. What makes it interesting is that he was a lone soldier in 1990-1991 -- during the Iraq war. I have never read insights from Israeli Soldiers during that time. It is also interesting that he didnt speak a word of hebrew and was put in an elite combat unit. The IDF no longer allows that -- or at least has set up a 4 month training program to teach non Hebrew speakers -- Hebrew. Well written and heart felt.
