Kindness VS Selfishness

Another great book filled with wisdom, Amma constantly talks about love and compassion, in chapter six Ammas says:“Children, if you are desirous of attaining Liberation, give up selfishness. Try to listen to the sorrows of the afflicted” These teachings are so profound and such a great reminder to care about others not just ourselves! Every page is a gift!

From the chapter on Surrender and Detachment: Amma says that, whatever our conception be, The Universal Power exists within you. This Supreme Truth can be attained only through faith and meditation. Just as you trust the words of scientists who talk about facts unknown to us, have faith in the words of the great Masters who speak about the Truth; they are established in that. The scriptures and the great Masters remind us that the Self, or God, is our true nature. God is not far away from us, but we need faith to imbibe this truth. God is not a limited individual who sits alone up in the clouds on a golden throne. God is Pure Consciousness that dwells within everything. Understanding this truth, learn to accept and love everyone equally. Very much recommend this book!

the ascribed author is a caucasian american who has lived a celibate brahmchari monk lifestyle of rigour and activity for 50+ years from the age of 19, [mostly of which in South India--] which is unheard of in the West even a hundred years ago, nonetheless today. No more, that under an illustrious teacher. He is a really genuine reflection of his views on life from a fresh perspective and give deep insight having witnessed many moving and great scenes in his long and well traveled life.. His quotations add for more direct context. A good read.

The title doesn't lie.

I purchased a very early edition of this book back in the 80's and you have to believe me, it changed my world. Sound, practical financial advice when you are starting out in life is an invaluable aid. I have since given away copies to all the young people I know as a graduation gift and like to think it has helped them start out on the right foot too.
I bought this update just to read Andy's insight into all the changes we are seeing in the financial arena and a quick review didn't disappoint me. I will finish reading it again cover to cover (OK I will skim some of it) by the weekend. After all when you are comfortably retired (fiscally and physically) you have time to indulge yourself with a good read.

Worthy and Entertaining

I'm pretty sure I have bought every edition of this book as it has come out, and this is no exception. Besides being the most entertaining book ever written on investing (faint praise on its face, but Tobias rivals Michael Lewis when it comes to being able to do this), the book is full of not so much financial how-to, like most such books, but financial wisdom, which is much harder to come by. Perhaps the greatest of these is: Trust No One. If you have earlier editions, there is not a lot of new text here -- it's definitely an update, not a revision.

Speaking of revisions, I do have a quibble about what appears to be a change in emphasis from earlier editions, in favor of putting a large percentage equities into retirement 401Ks; my quibble is that there is little or no mention of the more recent arguments against that (eg., Merton, Shiller; Merton, in particular, argues that for most people, that the downside risks of stocks make them too risky for retirement accounts, except for very young workers; according to this view, stocks are appropriate only once the you have reached your minimum safe retirement level of future income, taking into account Soc Security and other pensions. Until that point is reached, you should be invested in safe assets, like TIPS ladders and, eventually, annuities. This is so despite the fact that stocks are statistically more likely to outperform other investments; the problem is that there is a real possibility that they will under-perform, leaving you below your minimum required retirement amount. See Merton's article, "The Crisis in retirement Planning, Harvard Business Review 2014). Although Tobias mentions the 2008 crash, he seems to suggest that the recovery in equities since then has made up for that. Alas, for many people, it has not; moreover, equities are richly valued right now, which suggests that their historic performance is unlikely to be repeated for future generations of retirees. So as Tobias advises, "trust no one," or I would say, take with a grain of salt, even this wise and immensely enjoyable book

Great introduction to the Military SciFi of H Paul Honsinger... Enjoyed it... Recommender

I just saw this novella from H Paul Honsinger, and gladly bought it. His first two novels were really good reads, and well written, with believable characters that I came to care about. This review isn't about those two books, except that it is a prequel to those novels. I must say that he has so thoroughly captured the Militay SciFi janura that, when I read his works I feel like I'm backing the cockpit myself. His stories aren't blue sky technology "magic", but plausible science. He takes pains to create scenarios that work in terms of real life, capitalizing on military tactics many will recognize from respected military sources. This is a nice starter book, that if you like it as much as I do, you will want to go out buy his two novels. And, as I am, eagerly wait for the upcoming publication of his third book! You won't be sorry nor waste your money if you try his books....

Great space opera novella that explains more about the early career of Max Robichahux. Good standalone book, good grammar, good spelling, well written, well ebooked. Has some spoilers If you haven't read either of the novels, especially To Honor Your Call Us.

No gratuitous violence, some references to sex that advance the plot.

Best of the best!

Honsinger writes some of the best stuff out there in the science fiction military genre. His lead and secondary characters make you identify with and become personally involved with cheering them on. The only problem is it takes him so long to give us the next book. John RIngo, Travis Taylor, David Weber, Kratman , he is as good as them. Once you buy his stuff you will be l like me checking every couple of days to see if something new is there. Write on Paul write on.

I bought this one when I was planning my journey to India, where I stayed for 6 months.
Studying with it and also with a native Tamil speaker while in India I obtained a LOT of congratulatory comments from my Indian colleagues, that make me believe this is a very nice start kick to Tamil language.
Despite, it's just impossible to do what the title invites you to: learn Tamil in a month, without ever hearing it? No, not possible.

Intro to Tamil

Tamil is one of the main Indian languages. For me, understanding the grammatical details is a bit confusing because it seems to "decline" words differently from other languages. Many grammatical terms are in Tamil, which makes things somewhat difficult to pronounce or understand. This is probably one of the main texts on Tamil and it's one that you need to take your time with, step by step. Tamil has a beautiful script. It is great for calligraphy.

Exciting must read!!

I just have to say that this is an awesome trilogy (which I hope is not ending with book 3)! It is worth a whole lot more than the $7.99 list price! This is a must read with each book better than the one before. You will not be sorry! PS-Didn't realize that this was a YA series when I began reading. I am well over the age of being considered a young adult and found that the story carries over well for any age. Happy Reading!!

Awesome Trilogy

What a great and entertaining story. The story was exciting and fun. I can add this to books I want to be movies or even a Tv series. The characters were well developed and especially Russ and Nadia had depth and integrity. I liked how all the characters worked together using their strengths and special powers to save the day. The story ended well enough, but I would have liked to hear more of the gang's adventures. Maybe a forth book someday? How about it? Karen?
