I finished reading Walter Fordham's newly published Iliana, A Winter Solstice Tale to my five year-old this morning. We ususally don't read Saturday mornings but she insisted we finish because we hadn't last night. Her immediate response when we ended was to rearrange one of her shelves so she would have 'somewhere special' to put the book, 'not with the other books.' (No prompting from Dad.) This book does a truly magnificent (and beautifully illustrated) job of presenting a spiritual view of the world to children. I can't recommend it highly enough. -- Michael Chender, Shambhala Sun

I wrote Iliana for my four children several years ago. I wanted them to have a story that could inspire them with a sense of their own goodness and bravery.

An inspiring and dramatic tale

Iliana is an inspiring story. I read it to my 5 year old (over a few evenings) and she become completely involved in the story. Then my 10 year old boy read it to himself and also loved it.
This is an adventure story about a girl who is on a quest to stop the days from growing shorter. By the end of her journey she has discovered a great deal about her self. I think this story is a great way to introduce children to the real meaning of bravery.

As a preschool teacher, I'm delighted to find a story that inspires young children in a possitive way. This is an adventure story and it's exciting for children. But it lacks the adrenaline of most adventure stories. This is a good thing. The kids have a real experience. Not just a fantasy.

Adventuring girl gains wisdom and brings back the sun

We first read this story to my son when he was 5. He loved it. I read an abridged version to his first grade class, and they also loved it and wanted to hear the whole thing. With the tiger, lion, garuda, dragon, magic suit of armor, king and queen, and songs, it does a good job of holding kids' attention and inspiring them to think about bravery, mindfulness, and dignity. It was out of print for a while, so we snatched up a copy when it became available again. I just wish there was a shorter version for reading out loud to groups and a play that we could have kids perform.
