City of Islands: Caribbean Intellectuals in New York (Caribbean Studies Series), by Tammy L. Brown

Tammy L. Brown uses the life stories of West Indian intellectuals to investigate the dynamic history of immigration to New York and the long battle for racial equality in modern America. The majority of the 40,000 black immigrants who arrived at Ellis Island during the first wave of Caribbean immigration to New York hailed from the English-speaking Caribbean―mainly Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad. Arriving at the height of the Industrial Revolution and a new era in black culture and progress, these black immigrants dreamed of a more prosperous future. However, northern-style Jim Crow hindered their upward social mobility. In response, Caribbean intellectuals delivered speeches and sermons, wrote poetry and novels, and created performance art pieces challenging the racism that impeded their success.

Brown traces the influences of religion as revealed at Unitarian minister Ethelred Brown’s Harlem Community Church and in Richard B. Moore’s fiery speeches on Harlem street corners during the age of the “New Negro.” She investigates the role of performance art and Pearl Primus’s declaration that “dance is a weapon for social change” during the long civil rights movement. Shirley Chisholm’s advocacy for women and all working-class Americans in the House of Representatives and as a presidential candidate during the peak of the Feminist Movement moves the book into more overt politics. Novelist Paule Marshall’s insistence that black immigrant women be seen and heard in the realm of American Arts and Letters at the advent of “multiculturalism” reveals the power of literature. The wide-ranging styles of West Indian campaigns for social justice reflect the expansive imaginations and individual life stories of each intellectual Brown studies. In addition to deepening our understanding of the long battle for racial equality in America, these life stories reveal the powerful interplay between personal and public politics.

Review

“Through a series of biographies, Tammy Brown presents us with an incisive and eye-opening history of the collaboration and conflict between Caribbean immigrants in the black melting pot that was Harlem during the twentieth century as they fought for black advancement and political rights in multiple forums including the church, concert hall, stage, and radical and conventional political parties all the while keeping alive the memory of their Caribbean roots and supporting the struggles of the folks at ‘home’ against British colonialism. In a way, Brown shows that these island people became Caribbean people in New York.”

―Richard Blackett, Andrew Jackson Professor of History, Vanderbilt University

City of Islands is an Uplifting Celebration of Black People in American History
By Aaron S. Taylor
If you need any more evidence on how our country has been significantly shaped by people of color, LOOK NO FURTHER. City of Islands well documents and uncovers the often untold histories of our nation's evolution as a melting pot and cultural mosaic.

Brown's text follows the lives of various black people, specifically immigrants and descendants of immigrants from the Caribbean, who have contributed exceptionally in a multitude of areas, from political trailblazers to world-renown performing artists and athletes. Instead of dryly accounting history, this book tells true stories with a movie-like detail that resuscitates every life, struggle, and accomplishment.

City of Islands doesn't feel like a history book, and I mean that in the best way. It is instead a celebration of black Caribbean people who have left their tremendous marks on America forever.

I enjoyed reading this book and I recommend City of Islands ...
By Amazon Customer
This is a great book, well researched and well written. Tammy Brown takes an interdisciplinary approach to analyzing Caribbean contributions to racial uplift, anti-colonialism and the civil rights movement. Being an African and a scholar of postcolonial theory, I have appreciated some detail that she has put in analyzing the Caribbean culture and I can see some parallels with most African cultures. I enjoyed reading this book and I recommend City of Islands to anyone interested in understanding the Caribbean culture and general experiences of people in the diaspora. Wathu

Well-written, well-researched, and colorful portraits of Caribbean Americans
By Anonymous
In this era of quick scholarship, Dr. Brown has pulled together a very thoughtful piece of literature that profiles the contributions of some of the most significant though under-celebrated Americans of Caribbean descent. Her book reflects the rigor of a serious scholar and public intellectual and is also accessible for a broad, public audience. Highly recommend this book for anyone interested in expanding their depth and understanding of the Caribbean American experience.

Toto's Reflections: The Leadership Lessons from the Wizard of Oz, by Kevin Fickenscher

Running with the Big Dogs! In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy's Toto was clearly a dog of character. He knew when to sit still, when to bark, and when to make a fuss. He was simply a real dog with real observations about real situations. And the Oz experience reinforced what his parents taught him as a small pup: Care deeply. Bark only when necessary but then, forcefully. Be curious. Express yourself. Embrace the world and have no fears. The story of Dorothy's journey to Oz has captivated generations of children and adults alike since it was first published by L. Frank Baum in 1900. Dorothy's adventures have been analyzed from virtually every perspective-psychological, historical, economic, and the like-except from the perspective of the only other character that was with her every step of the way: Toto! Dorothy's little dog wrote this book and buried his manuscript in a can with an old bone on the original Gale farmstead. Dr. Fickenscher came upon it quite accidently and was given the opportunity to edit Toto's original thoughts on the Leadership Lessons from The Wizard of Oz, which he now shares with you. Of course, there are the usual thoughts on brainpower, heart, and courage, but in this book, there is much, much more. The many lessons of Oz will captivate your imagination and, no doubt, serve as a guide in your quest to become a better leader! Toto's Reflections will help you contribute to making a difference in the world, and challenge you to consider what you can do, starting right now, to make the world a better place!

Impressive suggestions
By Thomas H. Olbricht
This book is a creative approach to management using the classic wizard of Oz story and featuring the dog Toto. I have been involved in management at all levels for almost 70 years, mostly in a university setting. At the highest level I have managed smaller enterprises such as academic journals. In the university itself I have mostly been in middle management. At that level I have been privileged to observe university presidents at close hand. I have read many works on management but I think for creative suggestions in a compact work this book is one of the best. It focuses not so much on competency. The assumption is that should one reach a high level of management competency is presumed. The focus is upon the people skills needed to move an organization or group into a desired future. It is my observation that highly competent people sometimes fail because they do not bring the rest of their personnel along with them as they pursue their goals. This book focuses upon collaboration, courage, trust, transparency, and matters of the heart. It is an excellent work for CEO's to purchase for their organizational managers so as to bring them together for discussing extraordinary management.

You lead by what you are
By Gruby
Toto is a most stimulating book from a leading American medical thought leader. Contrary to most CEO like leader books, this is not a how-to with item list consistently applied. Instead the focus is on the character of the leader. It is on page 125 where we learn one early defining source of the author’s narrative. He is standing on his father's family farm porch holding his father's hand, absorbing the hail storm disaster that just destroyed the wheat and the farm when his father with quiet resilient fortitude states "Well, I guess we should get on with the rest of our life". Dr Fickenscher's book points to the attributes of character which will guide leaders and their corporate ships through challenging waters. The 15 "Lessons" are qualities necessary for those who lead. Values of Integrity, Commitment, Excellence and Responsive are imperative. Two quotes define the essence of character: "in the end, keeping our integrity is most important part of being a successful leader" and “It is important to embrace the world and have no fear”. One of the more interesting chapters is On Courage where the author states "Courage is commitment" and "Commitment is the energy that feeds the soul of followers". Forty-nine times "commitment" is found in this chapter. The very last paragraph of the chapter tells us how to bind the cornerstones of commitment and faith by the leader offering hope, the "foundation for integrity of leadership". Dr Fickenscher is asserting that the inner qualities exhibited externally drives success for the team. He is spot on.

Much to learn from those without a voice
By Bonnie Braun
While many other authors focused on the main speaking characters in the Wizard of Oz, the author minds us that the ones without a voice, the quiet ones can teach us as well.

Fascinante y controvertido
By Jovanna

From Publishers Weekly
The menacing darkness that lurked at the edges of Pullman's trilogy of Victorian-era thrillers ( The Ruby in the Smoke et al.) comes to the fore in this contemporary tale of shattered innocence and betrayed love set in Oxford, England. From the first line--"Chris Marshall met the girl he was going to kill on a warm night in early June"--the sense of imminent evil and inexorable doom builds unrelentingly to the novel's violent, gutwrenching climax. Naive and well-intentioned, 17-year-old Chris has love, not murder, on his mind when he meets and later beds Jenny (described in lyric and intimate detail), who has run away from her abusive father. Indeed, it is precisely Chris's trusting nature and sense of justice that cause the youth to be duped by a vengeful felon into causing Jenny's death--and only then because she is mistaken for someone else. Here is a modern-day Shakespearean tragedy, with star-crossed lovers separated by fate, a terrifyingly philosophical villain and assorted innocents, cads and buffoons. Its evocative narrative and throat-tightening suspense make this novel a compelling read; however, the graphic sex, moral ambiguity and somber ending make it most suitable for mature YA readers. Ages 12-up.

Young Adult IS appropriate
By Roger Reynolds
Enough with Romeo and Juliet, enough with 'near-pornography'! The fact that this is a tragedy reminiscent of Shakespeare is used as a contrast of R&J, not a retelling.

Its flaws are of logical plot turns and character, not a misplacement in the young adult genre. It IS a young adult novel, written about a boy and girl more realistic, perhaps, than parents would like their children to read about, but it is far from pornographic (look in your school libraries for Tropic of Cancer and Ulysses if you want something to get angry about). Much is said here about Chapter 6, but what of Chapter 13? Is sex so much worse than an innocent's death? Young people read more graphic things in Cosmo and the Bible.

This novel is about powerlessness and self-doubt in the face of Fate, and in that it succeeds better than most.

A modern addition to Pullman's scope of wonderful books
By A Customer
Philip Pullman has done it again in this captivating novel about trust, betrayal and love. While His Dark Materials was delightful in an innocent, fantastical sort of way, this book seemed a bit darker, more honest, and truer to our life. None of those things are bad or good; they're just different; and if you're expecting another THE GOLDEN COMPASS, change your expectations or you may be startled. This is an older children's book, more for fans of Chris Crutcher than C.S. Lewis. The characters are like people you meet on the street, not "destiny children" like Lyra and Will. They have dark pasts and modern-day troubles. You will love them and understand them as normal contemporary people.
Pullman's descriptions bring the print of the book to real life. Without ever boring you, he lets you feel Chris's emotions, and Jenny's, and their feelings about their pasts and each other. It's a tragedy book with plentiful references to child abuse, sex and troubled families, which means I wouldn't give it to a ten-year-old who adored HIS DARK MATERIALS, but read it yourself and give it to him in a few years' time, and he'll love it for what it is: a compelling modern masterpiece.

How to Render: the fundamentals of light, shadow and reflectivity, by Scott Robertson, Thomas Bertling

This book is about the fundamentals of light, shadow and reflectivity; the focus is firmly on helping to improve visual understanding of the world around and on techniques for representing that world. Rendering is the next step after drawing to communicate ideas more clearly. Building on what Scott Robertson and Thomas Bertling wrote about in How To Draw: Drawing and Sketching Objects and Environments from Your Imagination, this book shares everything the two experts know about how to render light, shadow and reflective surfaces. This book is divided into two major sections: the first explains the physics of light and shadow. One will learn how to construct proper shadows in perspective and how to apply the correct values to those surfaces. The second section focuses on the physics of reflectivity and how to render a wide range of materials utilizing this knowledge. Throughout the book, two icons appear that indicate either “observation” or “action.” This means the page or section is about observing reality or taking action by applying the knowledge and following the steps in creating your own work. Similar to our previous book, How To Draw, this book contains links to free online rendering tutorials that can be accessed via the URL list or through the H2Re app.

A quintessential foundation for design
By BCR
In the current landscape of easy-to-use 3D rendering software, it is easy to overlook the foundations of what make a great-looking and realistic image. I have been doing 3D animation and rendering for close to 15 years and I can honestly say that this book is essential for anyone interested in that field. Not because it has tips and tricks for how to press the right buttons, but instead gives you a practical understanding that transcends software. Scott does rendering in photoshop, yet can achieve results that I have seen people struggle over in 3D packages. All because he understands the fundamentals. The video content is fantastic bonus and for anyone interested in what that is like, check out Scott's youtube channel which is also an equally fantastic resource.

For those of you who need to improve your drawing first, there is no real drawing in this book. Instead, check out Scott's How to Draw book, which is equally good.

Another indispensable drawing guide
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:2bd40fa6a1171d777f1509bafbe15920]]Here's the sequel to Scott Robertson's earlier book How to Draw.

How to Render builds on what was taught in the earlier book and now talks about lighting, shadows, reflections and materials. Again, it's a book for artists, architects and designers.

The difficulty level here is up one notch, more suitable for intermediate and advanced artists. Basically, you need to know how to draw before you can learn and apply the knowledge from this book. That's where the earlier book comes in.

The presentation style of the book is still similar. Book's slightly thicker at 272 pages and is available in paperback and hardcover. There are lots of diagrams, photos, artworks accompanied by concise and insightful writeup. The information is technical and in depth. Demonstration videos are provided on the companion website which you can access by scanning QR code in the book or typing the URL address.

The first half of the book covers light and shadow. This is where you learn the basics of lighting, and the rules of applying them. It starts off with the simple humble cube and progresses to complex overlapping geometric shapes, spheres and cylinders and then onto curved surfaces that you typically see in vehicles such as cars and planes.

If you know the Sketchup software, then you might know about the beautiful shadows that can be turned on with just one mouse click. Well, with this book, you get to learn how to draw all those shadows by hand manually, and learn the actual techniques to creating them accurately. It's not easy, but the book does a good job at demystifying the whole process with clear hey-follow-along instructions.

Still in the lighting section, there are some step-by-step demonstrations by guest artists Chris Ayers, Neville Page, John Park and Robh Ruppel on how to render specific objects like cars, characters and landscapes. Basically, it's to show how they apply the knowledge into actual drawings.

This is where I have to do a -_- because the tutorial Robh Ruppel wrote is the one I was expecting to be in his Graphic L.A. artbook but it wasn't!

The second half of the book goes into reflections, talking about the different lighting conditions and how they affect the different types surfaces and the look they create. This section is more explanation than hands-on -- this is not a book on software or digital painting. Numerous photos are provided to illustrate the concepts behind, to alert you to things you should take note of. Very insightful.

Here's the list of chapters included to give you an idea what to expect.

1. What is Rendering? + Tools and materials
2. Light Types and Casting Shadows
3. Rendering the Geo Forms
4. Complex Volumes
5. Rendering Specific Objects
6. Photo Reference
7. Reflective Surfaces
8. Reflections: Indoor Scenes
9. Reflections: Outdoor Scenes
10. Rendering Specific Materials
11. Rendering Examples

Scott Robertson has hit another home run with this wonderful technical book on light, shadows and reflections. It's an incredible resource for learners.

Highly recommended.

The best book out there for learning how to render your line drawings
By TheHobbyGuy
I picked up this book after reading the first book in the series:

I find this book is an excellent continuation on the first. The first sets up your fundamentals and this book builds on that solid foundation with skills that will serve you if you want to take a fundamentally high quality line drawing to the next level by accurately rendering it.

This book is printed on the same high quality thick paper that the first book was printed on. Also, I find the content to be as much if not more than the first book.

Pros:
*Excellent explanation of rendering techniques
*Great examples
*Printed on very high quality paper

Cons:
*None

Additional Considerations:
If you have not read the first book in this series I feel like it would be useful to anyone--even the experienced. I would get it and go through it before going through this book: How to Draw: drawing and sketching objects and environments from your imagination

Overall: 5/5 stars (>=.5 rounds up, 5 stars

True Colors, by Kristin Hannah

Women across America laughed, cried, and reconnected with their friends after reading Kristin Hannah's smash hit, Firefly Lane. Now, in True Colors, she explores the poignant, powerful, complex world of sisters…
The Grey sisters had only each other when their mother died years ago. Their stern, unyielding father gave them almost no attention. Winona, the oldest, needs her father's approval most of all. An overweight dreamer, she never felt at home on the sprawling horse ranch that had been in her family for three generations. Aurora, the middle, is the peacemaker. Vivi Ann, the youngest, is the undisputed star of the family. Everything comes easily to Vivi Ann, her father's love most of all. But when Vivi Ann makes a fateful decision to follow her heart, rather than take the route of a dutiful daughter, events are set in motion that will test the love and loyalties of the Grey sisters. They will be pitted against each other in ways none could have imagined. Secrets will be revealed, and a terrible, shocking crime will shatter both the family and their beloved town. With breathtaking pace and penetrating insight, Kristin Hannah's True Colors is a novel about sisters, vengeance, jealousy, betrayal―and ultimately, what it truly means to be a family.

The day Vivi Ann had been waiting for—January 25— seemed to take forever to arrive. When it finally came, she woke even earlier than usual. Long before dawn had lightened the night sky, she threw back the covers and got out of bed. In the cold darkness of her room, she dressed in insulated coveralls and a woolen cap. Grabbing a pair of worn leather work gloves, she stepped into big rubber boots and went outside.

Technically she didn’t have to feed the horses. Her latest ranch hand would do it. But since she was too excited to sleep, she figured she might as well do something useful.

Without a moon to guide her, she couldn’t see anything except a ghostly silvered image of her own breath, but if therewas one thing Vivi Ann knew in this world, it was the lay of her father’s land.

Water’s Edge.

More than one hundred years ago, her great- grandfather had homesteaded this property and founded the nearby town of Oyster Shores. Other men had chosen easier, more populated areas, places with easier access, but not Abelard Grey. He had crossed the dangerous plains to get here, lost one son to an Indian raid and another to influenza, but still he’d moved West, lured by a dream to this wild, secluded corner of the Evergreen State. The land he chose, one hundred and twenty- five acres tucked between the warm blue waters of the Hood Canal and a forested hillside, was spectacularly beautiful.

She walked up the small rise toward the barn they’d built ten years ago. Beneath a high, timbered ceiling, a large riding arena was outlined by four- rail fencing; twelve box stalls flanked the east and west sides of the structure. After she opened the huge sliding door, the overhead lights came on with a sound like snapping fingers, and the horses instantly became restless, whinnying to let her know they were hungry. For the next hour, she separated flakes of hay from the bales stacked in the loafing shed, piled them into the rusted wheelbarrow, and moved down the uneven cement aisles. At the last stall, a custom- made wooden sign identified her mare by her rarely used registered name: Clementine’s Blue Ribbon.

“Hey, girl,“ she said, unbolting the wooden door and sliding it sideways.

Clem nickered softly and moved toward her, sneaking a bite of hay from the wheelbarrow.

Vivi Ann tossed the two flakes into the iron feeding rack and closed the door behind her. While Clem ate, Vivi Ann stood beside her, stroking the big mare’s silky neck.

“Are you ready for the rodeo, girl?”

The mare nuzzled her side as if in answer, almost knocking Vivi Ann off her feet.

In the years since Mom’s death, Vivi Ann and Clementine had become inseparable. For a while there, when Dad had quit speaking and started drinking, and Winona and Aurora had been busy with high school, Vivi Ann had spent most of her time with this horse. Sometimes, when the grief and emptiness had been too much for Vivi Ann to handle, she’d slipped out of her bedroom and run to the barn, where she’d fall asleep in the cedar shavings at Clem’s hooves. Even after Vivi Ann had gotten older and become popular, she’d still considered this mare her best friend. The deepest of her secrets had been shared only here, in the sweet- smelling confines of the last box stall on the east aisle.

She patted Clem’s neck one last time and left the barn. By the time she reached the house, the sun was a smear of butterscotch-yellow light in the charcoal- gray winter sky. From this vantage point, she could see the steel-gray waters of the Canal and the jagged, snow-covered peaks of the distant mountains.

When she stepped into the shadowy farm house, she could hear the telltale creaking of floorboards and knew her father was up. She went into the kitchen, set three places at the table and then started breakfast. Just as she put a plate of pancakes into the oven to warm, she heard him come into the dining room. Pouring him a cup of coffee, doctoring it with sugar, she took it to him.

He took it from her without looking up from his Western Horseman magazine.

She stood there a moment, wondering what she could say that would start a conversation.

Dressed in his usual work clothes—well- worn Wrangler jeans and a plaid flannel shirt, with a saucer- sized silver belt buckle and leather gloves tucked in his waistband—he looked like he did every morning. And yet there was something different, too: a subtle collection of lines or wrinkles that aged his face.

The years since Mom’s death had been unkind to him, sharpening his features and adding shadows where none belonged, both in his eyes and in the fleshy bags beneath. His spine had curved; it was the mark of a farrier, he said, the natural result of a lifetime spent hammering nails into horses’ hooves, but loss had played a part in that curving of his spine, too. Vivi Ann was certain of it. The weight of an unexpected loneliness had reshaped him as surely as the hours he’d spent hunched at work. The only time he really stood tall anymore was when he was in public, and she knew how much it pained him to appear unbowed by his life.

He sat down at the table and read his magazine while Vivi Ann readied and served breakfast.

“Clem’s made some awesome practice runs this month,“ she said, taking her place across from him. “I really think we have a chance of winning the rodeo in Texas.”

“Where’s the toast?”

“I made pancakes.”

“Fried eggs need toast. You know that.”

“Mix them in with the hash browns. We’re out of bread.”

Dad sighed heavily, obviously irritated. He looked pointedly at the empty place setting on the table. “You seen Travis this morning?”

Vivi Ann glanced through the window toward the barn. There was no sign of their ranch hand anywhere. No tractor out and running, no wheelbarrow by the barn door. “I fed the horses already. He’s probably out fixing that fence.”

“You picked another winner with that one. If you’d quit res-cuin’ every hurt horse between here and Yelm, we wouldn’t need no help around here at all. And the truth is we can’t afford it.”

“Speaking of money, Dad... I need three hundred bucks for the rodeo this week and the coffee can is empty.”

He didn’t respond.

“Dad?”

“I had to use that money to pay the hay bill.”

“It’s gone?”

“The tax bill just came, too.”

“So we’re in trouble,“ Vivi Ann said, frowning. She’d heard it before, of course, had always known there wasn’t much money, but for the first time, it really hit home. She understood suddenly why Winona was always harping about saving money for taxes. She cast an upward glance at her dad. He sat hunched forward, with his elbows on the table. Her sisters would have seen that as rude; Vivi Ann was sure she knew better. “Your back hurting you again?”

He didn’t answer, didn’t even acknowledge the question.

She got up, went into the kitchen, and got him some ibuprofen, setting the pills gently on the table between them.

His splayed farrier’s hand closed over them.

“I’ll find a way to get the money, Dad. And I’ll win this week. Maybe as much as two thousand bucks. Don’t you worry.”

They finished the rest of the meal in silence, with him reading his magazine. When he was done, he pushed back from the table and stood up. Reaching for the sweat- stained brown felt cowboy hat that hung on a hook by the door, he said, “Make me proud.”

“I will. ’Bye, Dad.”

After he left, Vivi Ann sat there, feeling unsettled.

For most of her twenty- four years she’d been like a leaf on the water, just floating along, following what ever current came her way. She’d tried changing direction a few times, but every attempt (like community college) had ended quickly, with her returning to this land.

She loved it here, plain and simple. She loved being around the horses, training them, and passing her expertise on to the bright- eyed girls who idolized her riding ability. She loved that everyone in town knew who she was and respected her and her family. She even loved the weather. Lots of folks complained about the gray days that followed each other, one after another, from November to April, but she didn’t mind at all. No rain, no rainbows. That was her motto, and had been since she was twelve years old, a girl standing beside a freshly dug grave, trying to make sense of an incomprehensible loss. Then, she’d told herself that life was short and having fun was what mattered.

Now, though, it was time for her to grow up. Water’s Edge needed her for once, instead of the other way around. She wasn’t sure exactly how to make a change. Business and planning were hardly her strong suits, but she was smarter than people gave her credit for being. All she had to do was think about it.

But first she needed to borrow three hundred dollars from one of her sisters.

She’d tell them it would be a good investment.

Winona liked running the show. Any show; every show. And not from the sidelines, either. In college, all it had taken was one constitutional law class, and she’d glimpsed her future. Now, at twenty- seven, she had her life pretty much as she wanted it. Not completely, of course (she was unmarried, not dating, childless, and struggling with her weight), but pretty much. She was far and away the most successful attorney in Oyster Shores. It was common knowledge that she was fair, opinionated, and smart. Everyone said she was a good person to have on your side. Winona valued her reputation almost as much as she did her education. Dad and Vivi Ann might wors...

Complex and beautiful book that deals with family. Definitely a new favorite author
By TBreakiron
True Colors is a book about three sisters and their lives as it unfolds over the course of thirty years, although it focuses on Vivi Ann and Winona most of all. Winona's jealousy stems from how Vivi Ann has always been their father's favorite and has always had his approval as well especially thirteen years after their mother's death when Vivi Ann starts dating Winona's best friend Luke. A man that Winona has been in love with for years. Aurora knows how she feels, but instead of telling Vivi Ann how she feels she secretly hopes they will broke up. In the meantime she has hired a new ranch hand Dallas who has his eye on Vivi Ann. A potential recipe for disaster since the man is half white and half Native American not to mention a tumultuous past. Although being a victim of child abuse could do that to a man. Because of his past not everyone in town particularly cares for the man which is probably what helps shape some of the events that happen later on in the book. And some of how Winona handles certain things both effects her relationship with her sisters as well as her friendship with Luke. The second half of the book deals a lot with a teenaged Noah and how knowledge of his father effects him and the consequences of how he deals with things. This book is a pretty complex look at families as well as what can happen to people when the Justice system gets things wrong and the importance of things like the Innocence Project and what an effect DNA has on old cases, good and bad, for the wrongfully accused. At times it was a little hard to like Winona but I believe she definitely redeems herself by the end.

A Review of "True Colors" written by Kristin Hannah
By Paul M. Harman
I picked this book off the Amazon list a month or so ago and finally got around to reading it. It is a very well written story of a family, crushed by grief but working through it and standing strong together. It's also a very different love story with many twists, and a lot of heart break and nasty small town prejudice. Through it all this family struggles and battles life's trials, keeping the family ranch going and holding one another up through some devastating life changes. An excellent book, a great story with believable characters that is hard to put down. A great book to curl up with.

Change
By Kindle Customer
When I started this book, I said to myself "I don't like any of these people. Why am I reading this.". But I continued and discovered as. time passed they all began to change. As they did, so did my opinion of them and the book. I loved the changes in them, whether caused by joy or pain. I ended up loving them all, and the book as well.
